Sporting greats attend opening of new PAC sports facility

Education, News, Sport ? By UniSA student on May 17, 2013 11:33 AM

By MAX BURFORD

Ian and Trevor Chappell returned to their former school last week?as Prince Alfred College unveiled their new multipurpose sports facility.

The Australian cricket greats spoke to a crowd of over 1300 keen onlookers at the school?s official opening of the $15 million Recreation, Education and Development (RED) Centre.

?The facility is fantastic ? a lot different to the gym when I was at the school,? Ian said.

?They have a good tradition of excellence.?

Despite Greg Chappell being unable to attend the opening with his brothers, Ian and Trevor spoke on his behalf in praising PAC for its sporting program.

?Our education here encouraged us to express our talents,? Ian said.

Joining the Chappell brothers at the opening were a host of old scholars including SANFL Hall of Famer Gordon Schwartz and Sturt Football Club CEO Matt Benson, while Melbourne Demons captain Jack Trengove recorded a message for the opening in his absence.

?It is a pity that I am not still at school to use these facilities,? Trengove joked.

?They are going to be a wonderful addition to helping boys develop their skills in a whole range of sports.?

The new RED Centre includes four multipurpose courts, a function centre, two indoor pools, weights rooms, sports science facilities and re-surfaced squash courts as well as a PAC Hall of Fame honouring past students? sporting achievements.

Current head of sport at the school Gary Jenkinson described the renovation as world-class.

?I think it?s a wonderful addition to our co-curricular sports program and it is great to have so many successful Old Reds like the Chappells come back to support it,? Jenkinson said.

?It gives kids the opportunity to hone their sporting skills in a state-of-the-art facility and it is a great way of enhancing the school?s great sporting tradition and reputation.?

In a further boost to the school?s sporting curriculum, Jenkinson was also pleased to announce the school?s appointment of Olympic swim coach Peter Bishop to run a new learn to swim program, which would be open to the public.

?We?ve had a few years of having to do without [the pool facilities] and the water polo and swim programs have deteriorated a little as a result,? Jenkinson said.

?But now we?ve got the new heated pool as well as new instructors to help our swim team prosper.?

The RED Centre is now open for all students, with plans to allow old scholars after hours use in the near future.

(AP) ? Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano raced side by side into the final lap, two bitter rivals unwilling to give even an inch ? right up until they made contact with less than a mile to go.

The race ended with Hamlin in the hospital, Logano in a shoving match with Tony Stewart, and Kyle Busch celebrating a victory that seemed secondary to all the fury at Fontana.

Hamlin was airlifted away from the track Sunday after a collision with Logano on the penultimate turn sent him nearly head-on into the inside wall, putting a spectacular finish on the fifth race of the NASCAR season.

Logano managed to finish third despite wrecking into the outside wall after hitting Hamlin, who spun Logano last week at Bristol and sparked a bitter post-race confrontation that didn't cool off during the past week.

"He probably shouldn't have done what he did last week, so that's what he gets," Logano said.

Yet the 22-year-old Logano might have even bigger worries than his burgeoning feud with Hamlin, whose team expects him to be fine. Stewart got into a post-race shoving match with Logano, with the three-time champion threatening to "whoop his (butt)" after Logano aggressively blocked Stewart out of a late restart.

"It's time he learns a lesson," Stewart said. "He's run his mouth long enough. ... He's nothing but a little rich kid that's never had to work in his life, so he's going to learn what us working guys who had to work our way up (know about) how it works."

Almost forgotten in the post-race frenzy was Busch, who led 125 of 200 laps in his Toyota and earned his first victory of the season when he sped past Hamlin and Logano on the final turn. Dale Earnhardt Jr. also ceded the spotlight, even though NASCAR's most popular driver moved into the Sprint Cup Series points lead with his second-place finish.

Even without Busch and Junior, NASCAR's closest race to Hollywood had an abundance of drama.

"I'm tired of these guys doing that stuff, especially out of a kid that's been griping about everybody else, and then he does that the next week," Stewart said, referring to Logano's complaints about other drivers' similar moves. "He sent Denny to the hospital and screwed our day up. He's talked the talk, but he hasn't walked the walk yet."

After a fairly entertaining race highlighted by Logano's aggressive move to block Stewart out of the final restart, the last lap developed into a spectacle pitting rivals already angry at each other about driving tactics.

Hamlin spun Logano at Bristol while Logano was racing for the late lead on that tight Tennessee bullring. Hamlin claimed Logano had cut him off three times earlier in the race, but Logano ran over to Hamlin's car afterward and leaned in his window for an angry exchange before the teams pulled them apart.

On Friday, Hamlin said he hoped the beef with Logano was finished, but Logano said he hadn't received any apology and wasn't feeling particularly forgiving.

They ended up racing together again in the opening laps at Fontana, with Logano practically grazing Hamlin's bumper early on. Their final-lap theatrics on Fontana's wide two-mile track appeared to be motivated by fierce racing for a win, not revenge.

They were side-by-side heading into the final lap and largely stayed that way until Turn 3, where Logano began to work up the track. The cars made contact and eventually lost control, with Logano hitting the wall while Hamlin slid inside and made heavy contact with the wall.

Hamlin got himself out of the car, but then slumped to the ground beside it before an ambulance arrived. He was eventually airlifted out due to traffic around the track.

NASCAR didn't immediately have an update on his condition, although JGR President J.D. Gibbs thought Hamlin would be fine. Hamlin's girlfriend, Jordan Fish, tweeted that Hamlin was "alert n awake, main concern is his back."

"We were super fast, led a lot of laps," Logano said. "Nothing to hang our head down about, that's for sure."

Stewart, the defending Fontana champion, then got his crack at Logano, who went extremely low to block Stewart out of the last restart, killing Stewart's momentum and consigning him to a 22nd-place finish.

"I had to throw the block there," Logano said. "That was a race for the lead. I felt if the 14 got underneath me, that was going to be the end of my opportunity to win the race, so I was just trying to protect the spot I had."

Stewart ran over to Logano's car and confronted him after the race, shoving the younger driver ? who then threw a water bottle at Stewart, the veteran said ? before teammates pulled them apart.

Stewart was replaced by Logano at Joe Gibbs Racing when Stewart left to drive for his own team starting in 2009.

"What the hell do you think I was mad about?" Stewart asked before providing a colorful series of expletives.

Roger Penske, in St. Petersburg, Fla., for the IndyCar race, firmly backed Logano, who was hired by Penske Racing last September.

"I think it's great," Penske said. "I think (Logano and Hamlin) have got to work it out themselves. He knows what the big picture is. To get yourself knocked off the track every other weekend, you'll never get in the Chase and have a chance to win the championship, so I think cooler heads will prevail. He said, 'I'm going to be around a long time,' was his comment to me."

Busch took advantage of his remarkable stroke of luck to pick up JGR's first victory at Fontana, the only track where the team had never won. Toyota also got its first Fontana win.

"They forgot about me. I knew they were going to," Busch said. "We had a good run on the top side, and they were messing with each other so bad that they took each other down. I was just hoping I could get by before they took me with him."

Earnhardt turned in yet another solid race and passed Brad Keselowski atop the points standings despite falling from third to 22nd late in the race with a dismal pit stop.

Carl Edwards came in fourth, with Kurt Busch fifth. Keselowski finished 23rd after starting at the back, missing the top five for the first time all season.

Kyle Busch's victory was his 25th in NASCAR, completing his ninth career weekend sweep after his Nationwide Series victory Saturday. He ended a 31-race Cup winless streak since last April at Richmond.

"Oh, by the way, I won the race today," Busch said. "That might be a story. I'm sure it's not, though."

Teachers union passes vote of no confidence in Michael Gove

Education secretary Michael Gove

Michael Gove stoked teachers' anger further at the weekend with an sharply critical article about the profession in the Mail on Sunday. Photograph: Oli Scarff/Getty Images

Hundreds of teachers have passed a vote of no confidence in the education secretary, Michael Gove, and the chief inspector of England's schools, Sir Michael Wilshaw.

Delegates at the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) annual conference overwhelmingly carried the motion. Teachers described Gove and Wilshaw as showing "abject failure to improve education or treat teachers, parents and pupils with respect".

ATL is the most moderate of the classroom unions and it is the first time in its history that delegates have passed a motion of no confidence in an education secretary.

Gove stoked teachers' anger this weekend by writing in the Mail on Sunday that they were against his plans for performance-related pay because they "resented the recognition of excellence". He also said headteachers of academies, unlike other state schools, "put the needs of children ahead of the demands of shop stewards".

Jean Roberts, from London, told the conference of 300 teachers: "We have no confidence in Gove or Wilshaw. If any of us behaved to our pupils the way they behave to our profession, we would be sacked."

Teachers are angry at changes to their pay and pensions and the scale of reforms to all parts of the curriculum. They are expected to voice their fury at Gove and Wilshaw at their annual conferences over the next week. The National Union of Teachers will also propose a vote of no confidence in Gove and call on Wilshaw to resign.

Mary Bousted, the ATL general secretary, said Gove and Wilshaw were "sucking the life and hope out of our education system and the teachers who work within it".

But Jesse Ratcliff, from Lincolnshire, told delegates to wait until the general election to show their displeasure with the government.

The conference also heard that some families were so poor that children were having to choose between catching a bus and having lunch. Teachers had to delve into their own pockets to ensure children had something to eat during the school day.

"We are not talking about sweet-stuffing Billy Bunters," said Clare Kellett, from West Somerset Community College. "Some of these students may not be sure of having a decent meal once in the day. Increasingly, teachers have to put their hands in their own pockets to lift children out of poverty."

Web-based Video Streaming High Speed Internet Connections ...

Web-based movie streaming has rapidly become one of the most popular mediums for watching videos over the Internet. Having said that, if your Internet connection speed is not sufficient, you?ll be among the many who become a victim of slow movie streaming along with repeated buffering. Make sure to equip yourself with the proper high speed internet data plan when choosing to watch more than one or two streamed movies a week.

The majority of online movie subscription providers like Netflix and Hulu need you to possess a download speed of at least 1mb so you can fully enjoy the whole range of their service. However, only video downloads are any good with this particular speed. You?ll need a faster broadband speed in order to be able to view your favorite online movies without a hitch.

Likewise, it's important to note, your ISP could possibly impose a fine for customers who consume an excessive amount of data on a monthly basis. If you try to save money on your plan, and go about the cheapest package you can find, you will probably find yourself spending a lot more in overuse charges over the long haul. You really need to talk with your ISP in order to go over what data transfer limits are currently imposed, and what package would best fit the bill when viewing consistent streamed movies and video.

In theory, it seems sensible to select the most appropriate data plan and/or connection speed for your movie streaming needs, right away, if you recognize that you?ll be selecting to view a majority of your videos and movies via your Internet connection. Make note, nearly all ISP providers provides you with usage of your own admin webpage where you can monitor your current bandwidth, up to the hour, at any given time. If you can't locate this area, contact your ISP customer service desk to ask them exactly where it's found.

If you would like to stream your movies on occasion, not less than 3 Mb per second is highly recommended. A minimum data speed of 6 Mbps is recommended for weekly enjoyment.

Bandwidth use for movie streaming

If you're making use of online movie streaming for 2 to 5 hours in an average day, a 140 GB plan should be more than enough to support your needs. Also be sure to take note of your other online activities like surfing, email, and reading online magazines.

To display your current broadband speeds, click here to see your broadband bandwidth speed. Remember, all Internet service providers offer a data package for almost any kind of customer. Remember that HD movies typically eat up close to 1.5 GB of bandwidth usage. If you are watching a lot of HD movies on a monthly basis, make sure to check on your data usage allocation webpage. If you find yourself regularly going over the usage limit, you need to speak with your provider about upgrading your data plan.

Most broadband providers will offer you around 250 Gigabytes of data per month. Anything over this level will tend to be a bit more costly. At 250 Gigabite a month, you are still able to stream up to 3 hours of HD movies per day. You may want to consider comparing the price of high-speed internet data plans from each provider to ensure that you?re getting the best bang for your buck.

Jihadist jokes about U.S. bounty: How much for just one leg?

American-born Islamist militant Omar Hammami, also known as Abu Mansur al-Amriki (Farah Abdi Warsameh/AP)An Alabama-born jihadist fighter thought to be in Somalia took to Twitter on Friday to mock the U.S. government?s $5 million bounty on his head?jokingly offering to raise some cash for his cause by selling off one leg.

Omar Hammami?who stars in his own YouTube videos, sometimes rapping his Islamist message, and has an aggressive Twitter presence?was reportedly added to the Rewards for Justice program that offers piles of cash for information leading to the capture or killing of high-profile extremists. CNN first broke the news.

Apparently unbowed, Hammami joked about the bounty on Twitter:

That was a reference to a dead Islamist commander of a Chechen rebel movement, who lost a leg while fighting the Russian army, noted Agence France-Presse.

U.S. officials say Hammami, initially a recruiter for al-Shabab in Somalia, which Washington has labeled a terrorist group, has fallen out with his former comrades. He has criticized them publicly; they say they want him dead.

Gay rights timeline: Key dates in the fight for equality

Fred W. McDarrah / Getty Images

One month after the demonstrations at the Stonewall Inn, activist Marty Robinson speaks to a crowd before the first mass march in support of gay rights in New York on July 27, 1969.

By Miranda Leitsinger, Staff Writer, NBC News

From its beginning with riots against police oppression of gays in New York City more than 40 years ago, the fight for gay rights continues today on new fronts: over marriage, therapies to ?cure? homosexuals and one of the country's most popular institutions, the Boy Scouts of America.

Next week, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in two landmark, same-sex-marriage cases.

?The swift road to marriage equality has produced millions of conversations around the dinner table and water cooler on the freedom of every American to marry the person they love. It is these conversations that have changed minds. But while we've reached the tipping point on marriage, there's still a ways to go for full LGBT equality, like ending bullying in schools and workplace discrimination,? Kevin Nix, a spokesman for the LGBT advocacy group, Human Rights Campaign, said in a statement.

Here is a look at some of the key moments in American LGBT history:

June 28, 1969: Start of the gay rights movement
The Stonewall Riots begin after police raid a popular unlicensed gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, in New York City's Greenwich?Village. The riots, which lasted for days, were triggered by police harassment of gays, according to media reports. This is considered by many to herald the start of the gay rights movement in the U.S.

June 27-28, 1970: First gay pride parades
On the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the nation's first gay pride parades are held in four cities ? New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Fred Sergeant, who attended the NYC parade, reflected in the Village Voice: ?Back then, it took a new sense of audacity and courage to take that giant step into the streets of Midtown Manhattan. ... I stayed at the head of the march the entire way, and at one point, I climbed onto the base of a light pole and looked back. I was astonished; we stretched out as far as I could see, thousands of us.? Pride events now are held worldwide every year.

San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, left, and Mayor George Moscone in April 1977.

Nov. 27, 1978: Assassination of Harvey Milk
Milk became the first openly gay man elected to office in a major U.S. city when he won a seat on San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in early 1978. An outspoken advocate for gay rights, he urged gays to come out and fight for their rights. Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by former supervisor Dan White. But Milk's legacy has lived on and California has designated May 22 as a day of ?special significance? in his honor.

1981: The AIDS crisis
Gay advocacy groups form to deal with the crisis gripping the community amid a slow government response to AIDS and the linking of the disease with gay men. Over the years, the AIDS Quilt will form, and some well-known figures will succumb to AIDS, including actor Rock Hudson, or be diagnosed with it, like basketball star Magic Johnson.

President Bill Clinton answers questions during a news conference in Taylor, Mich., in 1996.

1993: 'Don't ask, don't tell'
President Bill Clinton enacts "don't ask, don't tell," a policy preventing gays from openly serving in the military. Under it, an estimated 13,000 people were expelled from the U.S. Armed Forces. President Barack Obama repealed the policy in 2011.?

1996: Congress bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage (DOMA)
Congress passes the Defense of Marriage Act. Section 3 of the statute bars recognition of same-sex marriage, affecting more than 1,100 provisions of federal laws. It denies gay couples the right to file joint taxes and the protections of the Family Medical and Leave Act, and it blocks surviving spouses from accessing veterans? benefits, among other things. The Supreme Court will hear a challenge to DOMA on March 27, 2013. Bill Clinton, who signed the legislation, recently came out against the law and asked the Supreme Court to repeal it.

April 30, 1997: 'Yep, I'm gay' -- Degeneres comes out?
Ellen Degeneres comes out on her television show, "Ellen," in an episode that drew in 42 million viewers. Her ratings plunged, which she said was due to a lack of promotion, and the show was pulled the next season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But she bounced back and she now hosts a popular afternoon talk show, "The Ellen Degeneres Show." Her ?coming out? heralded an era of other gay celebrities following suit, and LGBT leading ladies and men have in the last year said they felt it was unnecessary to reveal their sexual preference.

Candlelight vigil for slain gay Wyoming student Matthew Shepard.

Oct. 12, 1998: Matthew Shepard's beating death
Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson rob and beat Shepherd, a 21-year-old college student, and tie him to a split-rail fence outside of Laramie, Wyo. He dies on Oct. 12, less than a week after the attack. The murder, for which the pair are each serving two consecutive life sentences, inspired "The Laramie Project," a play and later film about Laramie in the year after the murder, and federal hate crimes legislation approved in 2009, that bears Shepard's name.

2000: Boy Scouts can ban gays
The Supreme Court rules that the Boy Scouts of America can bar gay Scouts and leaders from membership, saying that as a private youth organization it has the right to do so. Under increasing pressure in recent years to change the policy, the BSA has said it will hold a vote on the controversial membership guidelines in May.

2003: Anti-sodomy law struck down
The Supreme Court strikes down a Texas anti-sodomy law, reversing an earlier decision made in another case 17 years earlier that Justice Anthony Kennedy said ?demeans the lives of homosexual persons.? Gays are ''entitled to respect for their private lives," Kennedy said for the court,?according to The New York Times. ''The state cannot demean their existence or control their destiny by making their private sexual conduct a crime.''?

2004: State same-sex marriage bans

2008 California's Prop. 8 nixes gay marriage
California?s Supreme Court rules that gays and lesbians should be allowed to wed. For a short time that year, some 18,000 same-sex couples tie the knot in the Golden State. But in November, voters approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage (Proposition 8) after a hard-fought, multimillion-dollar campaign ? one of the most expensive on this issue. The Supreme Court will hear a challenge to Prop. 8 on March 26, 2013.

In an interview with Robin Roberts of ABC's "Good Morning America," on May 9, 2012, President Barack Obama spoke in support of gay marriage for the first time as president.

May 9, 2012: First sitting president to support same-sex marriage
Barack Obama becomes the first sitting U.S. president to back marriage for gay and lesbian couples. It marked a reversal from his 2008 campaign, when he said he opposed same-sex marriage but favored civil unions as an alternative. His announcement came one day after voters in North Carolina passed a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage as well as civil unions for gay and lesbian couples.

Nov. 4, 2012: In a first, gay marriage wins at the ballot box
Voters in Maine approve same-sex marriage in the first vote brought by supporters, while voters in Maryland and Washington uphold state legislation allowing gays and lesbians to wed. And in Minnesota, voters reject ? for the second time nationwide ? a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

By Steve Keating ORLANDO, Florida, March 20 (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy's decision to skip the Arnold Palmer Invitational surprised the tournament host, who expressed his disappointment on Wednesday that the world number one was not at Bay Hill this week. The 83-year-old Palmer said he had jokingly suggested he might break McIlroy's arm if he did not show up but did not try to force the young Northern Irishman into making an appearance. "Frankly, I thought he was going to play, and I was as surprised as a lot of people when he decided he was not going to play," said Palmer. ...

Potential immune benefits of strong vitamin D status in healthy individuals

Mar. 20, 2013 ? Research from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) shows that improving vitamin D status by increasing its level in the blood could have a number of non-skeletal health benefits.

The study, published online in PLOS ONE, reveals for the first time that improvement in the vitamin D status of healthy adults significantly impacts genes involved with a number of biologic pathways associated with cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), infectious diseases and autoimmune diseases. While previous studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk for the aforementioned diseases, these results go a step further and provide direct evidence that improvement in vitamin D status plays a large role in improving immunity and lowering the risk for many diseases.

Vitamin D is unique in that it can be both ingested and synthesized by the body with sun exposure. It is then converted by both the liver and kidneys to a form that the body can use. An individuals' level of vitamin D, or their vitamin D status, is determined by measuring the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the blood. Vitamin D deficiency, which is defined as a status of less than 20 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, can cause a number of health issues, including rickets and other musculoskeletal diseases. Recently, however, data suggests that vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/mL) and vitamin D insufficiency (between 21-29 ng/mL) is linked to cancer, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The randomized, double-blind, single-site pilot trial involved eight healthy men and women with an average age of 27 who were vitamin D deficient or insufficient at the start of the trial. Three participants received 400 International Units (IUs) of vitamin D per day and five received 2,000 IUs per day for a two-month period. Samples of white blood cells (immune cells) were collected at the beginning of the two-month period and again at the end. A broad gene expression analysis was conducted on these samples and more than 22,500 genes were investigated to see if their activity increased or decreased as a result of the vitamin D intake.

At the end of the pilot, the group that received 2000 IUs achieved a vitamin D status of 34 ng/mL, which is considered sufficient, while the group that received 400 IUs achieved an insufficient status of 25 ng/mL.

The results of the gene expression analysis indicated statistically significant alterations in the activity of 291 genes. Further analysis showed that the biologic functions associated with the 291 genes are related to 160 biologic pathways linked to cancer, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and CVD.

Examining gene response elements, or sequences of DNA bases that interact with vitamin D receptors to regulate gene expression, they also identified new genes related to vitamin D status. To ensure that their observations were accurate, the researchers looked at 12 genes whose level of expression does not change, and those genes remained stable throughout the trial period.

"This study reveals the molecular fingerprints that help explain the non-skeletal health benefits of vitamin D," said Michael F. Holick, PhD, MD, professor of medicine, physiology and biophysics at BUSM and leading vitamin D expert who served as the study's corresponding author. "While a larger study is necessary to confirm our observations, the data demonstrates that improving vitamin D status can have a dramatic effect on gene expression in our immune cells and may help explain the role of vitamin D in reducing the risk for CVD, cancer and other diseases."

'Sequester' job cuts may have been exaggerated, experts say

By Lucia Mutikani

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Deep government spending cuts are unlikely to weigh on employment as heavily as initially feared, with most of the impact reducing hours worked rather than payrolls, according to economists.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office last month estimated that the $85 billion in federal budget cuts known as the "sequester," which started taking hold on March 1, would cost the economy about 750,000 jobs by the end of the year.

Several economists have dismissed the CBO projection as too high and said in the worst case scenario, total job losses would probably be in the region of 300,000, partly because government agencies are likely to reduce hours worked to try to limit layoffs.

"The major flaw in sequester-related government job loss estimates is that they typically are generated by simply dividing spending cuts by average wages and salaries for federal workers," said Maury Harris, chief economist at UBS in New York.

"However, the sequester instead is being implemented primarily through furloughs entailing one- or two-day drops in the monthly workweek per worker. Such furloughs spread the pain and do not entail major headcount cuts."

The CBO was not immediately available for comment.

Economists acknowledged there would be job losses among government contract workers. While a lack of data on the size of the contract workforce made it difficult to accurately estimate the sequester's impact, layoffs would still not add up to the CBO's estimate, they said.

"One way to gauge the potential hit to contract labor is to consider the amount of savings the government expects to receive as a result of sequester cuts after stripping out expected savings from both reductions to federal agency government labor and overhead costs," said Laura Rosner, an economist at BNP Paribas in New York.

This analysis, said Rosner, suggested job cuts would amount to just over 300,000.

"When exactly these workforce reductions will occur in 2013 is an open question. We think the furlough portion of the sequestration impact is likely to be felt throughout the fiscal year," she said.

"We are neither convinced yet that the job cuts will take place immediately nor that they will be completed within a matter of months. These job cuts will probably lower payroll growth and put upward pressure on the unemployment rate, all else equal."

The unemployment rate fell 0.2 percentage point to 7.7 percent in February.

Similar views are shared by other economists, who also pointed that the drag from the spending cuts would weigh more on hours worked, which in turn would undercut earnings.

"You can work three days a week as opposed to five and you are not considered unemployed. You won't see a 700,000 hit to payrolls because of sequestration, we think you will see a hit to hours worked, that will decline," said Tom Higgins, global macro strategist at Standish Mellon Asset Management in Boston.

While the decline in hours worked would curb pay, the impact on consumer spending was expected to be blunted by improving household balance sheets, thanks to record low interest rates and rising home and share prices.

Many economists project nonfarm payroll growth averaging between l75,000 and 200,000 per month this year. UBS forecast a 100,000 annual decline in federal government payrolls.

Student Loan Hero Organizes Your Massive Student Loan Debt and Helps You Pay It Off

Student Loan Hero Organizes Your Massive Student Loan Debt and Helps You Pay It OffStudent loan debt amounts to a massive $1 trillion across the board, with an average of $27,000 per person. Paying it off is only made more difficult by different loan sources and a lack of realistic payment plans. Student Loan Hero (SLH) organizes all your student debt into a single web interface and helps you get on the right path towards paying it off.

To start, you enter your login credentials to various federal loan providers (or Sallie Mae for private loans) and SLH connects to them to download your data. For unsupported providers, you'll need to enter relevant information (e.g. due dates, interest rates, etc.) manually. SLH then analyzes your provided information to help you figure out a simple payment plan across the many loans. It also tracks your payments so you don't miss any and wind up costing yourself more money. For those of you concerned about information privacy, you can take a look at SLH's privacy policy to learn more about their security practices.

SLH is free to use. They make their money through referrals with banking partners, such as loan consolidation services, so you don't need to provide a credit card and accidentally wind up paying for something if you sign up. If you need to get your student debt in order, give it a shot. If you've got all kinds of debt you need to manage, you may also want to check out previously mentioned ReadyForZero as well.

1 region, 2 functions: Brain cells' multitasking key to understanding overall brain function

1 region, 2 functions: Brain cells' multitasking key to understanding overall brain function

Thursday, March 7, 2013

A region of the brain known to play a key role in visual and spatial processing has a parallel function: sorting visual information into categories, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Chicago.

Primates are known to have a remarkable ability to place visual stimuli into familiar and meaningful categories, such as fruit or vegetables. They can also direct their spatial attention to different locations in a scene and make spatially-targeted movements, such as reaching.

The study, published in the March issue of Neuron, shows that these very different types of information can be simultaneously encoded within the posterior parietal cortex. The research brings scientists a step closer to understanding how the brain interprets visual stimuli and solves complex tasks.

"We found that multiple functions can be mapped onto a particular region of the brain and even onto individual brain cells in that region," said study author David Freedman, PhD, assistant professor of neurobiology at the University of Chicago. "These functions overlap. This particular brain area, even its individual neurons, can independently encode both spatial and cognitive signals."

Freedman studies the effects of learning on the brain and how information is stored in short-term memory, with a focus on the areas that process visual stimuli. To examine this phenomenon, he has taught monkeys to play a simple video game in which they learn to assign moving visual patterns into categories.

"The task is a bit like a baseball umpire calling balls and strikes," he said, "since the monkeys have to sort the various motion patterns into two groups, or categories."

The monkeys master the tasks over a few weeks of training. Once they do, the researchers record electrical signals from parietal lobe neurons while the subjects perform the categorization task. By measuring electrical activity patterns of these neurons, the researchers can decode the information conveyed by the neurons' activity.

"The activity patterns in these parietal neurons carry strong information about the category that each motion pattern gets assigned to during the task," Freedman said.

Over the years, his team's work on categorization has zeroed in on the lateral intraparietal (LIP) area. Studies have shown that this area is vital to directing spatial attention and eye movements. But it had been unclear how an area involved in spatial attention and eye movements could also play a role in non-spatial functions such as visual categorization.

To compare spatial and category functions in the parietal lobe, Freedman and his team added a twist to the monkeys' task. During the category task, the researchers required the subjects to make eye-movements to visual cues at various positions on the computer screen, but the subjects still had to categorize the visual patterns at the same time that they made these eye movements.

Since this parietal brain area is known to be involved in eye movements, the eye movements could have disrupted category information in that part of the brain. Instead, parietal brain cells showed a simultaneous and independent encoding of both eye-movement and category information?multiplexing of information at the level of single brain cells.

"These signals rode right on top of the eye-movement signals," said the study's first author, Chris Rishel, PhD, a recent graduate from Freedman's laboratory. "We could decode both the eye-movement and the category signals with high accuracy. This tells us that different kinds of information that are usually considered quite unrelated were simultaneously and independently represented by neurons in this particular brain area."

Their results, the study authors note, "support the possibility that LIP plays a key role in transforming visual signals in earlier sensory areas into abstract category signals during category-based decision-making tasks."

What does the brain gain from this territorial arrangement?

"There has long been a tendency to look at the many distinct anatomical areas of the cerebral cortex of the brain and to assume that each area is like a specialized module that plays a very specific function." Freedman said. "Our results support the growing sense that most, if not all, of these brain areas have multiple overlapping roles."

A brain that includes such overlapping functional centers may be more efficient, Freedman suggests. "It makes mapping these regions more complicated for scientists like us, but it may boost the brain's capacity. If each area can do a number of different things, you can squeeze a lot more function into the same space."

A next step is to understand how neuronal category representations develop in LIP neurons during the learning process, the authors said.

How Billl Nemitz May Have Cheated Colon Cancer

?

Sharing what's on his mind is what newspaper columnist Bill Nemitz does for a living. Sometimes though, it takes more than words to get people to pay attention. Telling everyone over 50, for instance, that they really need to have a colonoscopy. It?can?prevent colon cancer.

You know you should schedule one, but you've heard that the stuff you have to drink for the prep is awful and that you never get to bed because you're on the toilet all night long. And when the doctor moves that scope around inside you it hurts like hell. So, instead of making the appointment, you procrastinate.

Well Bill, who's 58, had his first colonoscopy about seven years ago and thought it wasn't bad at all. When he had his second one this week, he graciously allowed a few people along, myself included, to document his experience. Read more.

1-Minute Strategies: March '13 ? Business Management Daily: Free ...

Keep your clothes wrinkle-free on the road. The SkyRoll garment bag wraps tightly around a hard cylinder, which has room for shoes and bulky items.

Schedule something great each day to help counteract morning grumpiness. When you have something you know you?ll enjoy doing each day, it can help you look forward to waking up with a smile on your face, says happiness expert Gretchen Rubin.

Sorting your email into categorized files could be a huge waste of time. Creating and remembering an email-?organization system eats up your precious time, so you could be better off just keeping everything in one place and using the search function to locate messages when you need them, says Dave John??son, CBS MoneyWatch.

Create an infographic everyone will want to read, without using a designer. Gather some solid data and use a tem??plate program such as Pikto??chart to make it beautiful, says Liz Seda, Lifehack.

Use an app to help you stay focused and on task. Apps such as Any.do, Toodledo, LeaveNow and CalAlarm can organize your to-dos and activities and even tell you when you need to leave for an appointment, says Kim Lachance Shandrow, entre?preneur.com.

Turn your iPhone into a presentation power tool. The $129 iPico hand-held projector is just slightly larger than your iPhone so you can take it wherever you go.

Lead even those you don?t manage. Is someone failing to do what needs to get done? Talk to him directly, and then if things don?t improve, tell him you?ll have to talk to his boss.

Every professional needs three different sorts of networks. First you need a ?posse? of trusted colleagues who have similar goals, then a ?regenerative community? with people you have personal connections to and finally a ?big idea crowd? who will expose you to new things.
