Researchers propose new way to probe Earth's deep interior

Friday, February 22, 2013

Researchers from Amherst College and The University of Texas at Austin have described a new technique that might one day reveal in higher detail than ever before the composition and characteristics of the deep Earth.

There's just one catch: The technique relies on a fifth force of nature (in addition to gravity, the weak and strong nuclear forces and electromagnetism) that has not yet been detected, but which some particle physicists think might exist. Physicists call this type of force a long-range spin-spin interaction. If it does exist, this exotic new force would connect matter at Earth's surface with matter hundreds or even thousands of kilometers below, deep in Earth's mantle. In other words, the building blocks of atoms?electrons, protons, and neutrons?separated over vast distances would "feel" each other's presence. The way these particles interact could provide new information about the composition and characteristics of the mantle, which is poorly understood because of its inaccessibility.

"The most rewarding and surprising thing about this project was realizing that particle physics could actually be used to study the deep Earth," says Jung-Fu "Afu" Lin, associate professor at The University of Texas at Austin's Jackson School of Geosciences and co-author of the study appearing this week in the journal Science.

This new force could help settle a scientific quandary. When earth scientists have tried to model how factors such as iron concentration and physical and chemical properties of matter vary with depth ? for example, using the way earthquake rumbles travel through the Earth or through laboratory experiments designed to mimic the intense temperatures and pressures of the deep Earth ? they get different answers. The fifth force, assuming it exists, might help reconcile these conflicting lines of evidence.

Earth's mantle is a thick geological layer sandwiched between the thin outer crust and central core, made up mostly of iron-bearing minerals. The atoms in these minerals and the subatomic particles making up the atoms have a property called spin. Spin can be thought of as an arrow that points in a particular direction. It is thought that Earth's magnetic field causes some of the electrons in these mantle minerals to become slightly spin-polarized, meaning the directions in which they spin are no longer completely random, but have some preferred orientation. These electrons have been dubbed geoelectrons.

The goal with this project was to see whether the scientists could use the proposed long-range spin-spin interaction to detect the presence of these distant geoelectrons.

The researchers, led by Larry Hunter, professor of physics at Amherst College, first created a computer model of Earth's interior to map the expected densities and spin directions of geoelectrons. The model was based in part on insights gained from Lin's laboratory experiments that measure electron spins in minerals at the high temperatures and pressures of Earth's interior. This map gave the researchers clues about the strength and orientations of interactions they might expect to detect in their specific laboratory location in Amherst, Mass.

Second, the researchers used a specially designed apparatus to search for interactions between geoelectrons deep in the mantle and subatomic particles at Earth's surface. The team's experiments essentially explored whether the spins of electrons, neutrons or protons in various laboratories might have a different energy, depending on the direction with respect to the Earth that they were pointing.

"We know, for example, that a magnet has a lower energy when it is oriented parallel to the geomagnetic field and it lines up with this particular direction ? that is how a compass works," explains Hunter. "Our experiments removed this magnetic interaction and looked to see if there might be some other interaction with our experimental spins. One interpretation of this 'other' interaction is that it could be a long-range interaction between the spins in our apparatus and the electron spins within the Earth, that have been aligned by the geomagnetic field. This is the long-range spin-spin interaction we were looking for."

Although the apparatus was not able to detect any such interactions, the researchers could at least infer that such interactions, if they exist, must be incredibly weak ? no more than a millionth of the strength of the gravitational attraction between the particles. That's useful information as scientists now look for ways to build ever more sensitive instruments to search for the elusive fifth force.

"No one had previously thought about the possible interactions that might occur between the Earth's spin-polarized electrons and precision laboratory spin-measurements," says Hunter.

"If the long-range spin-spin interactions are discovered in future experiments, geoscientists can eventually use such information to reliably understand the geochemistry and geophysics of the planet's interior," says Lin.

Galaxy S4 to Feature Samsung Orb, Their TouchWiz Version of Photo Sphere

Photo Sphere Header

Even though it may not work as well as some would either expect or hope it to, Photo Sphere is still one of my favorite additions to Android 4.2. According to a report from Android Geeks, who supposedly have a friend on Samsung?s software engineering team, Photo Sphere will most certainly be present on the upcoming Galaxy S4 from Samsung. Naturally, they are renaming it to Samsung Orb, which throws me off, but I wouldn?t put anything past Sammy at this point.?

That does sort of imply they created the idea, but with Samsung being the only OEM currently making any real money off of Android, I don?t think Google cares what they do at this point. Apparently, the source stated that Samsung Orb will be even better than Photo Sphere, thanks to the ?S4?s amazing camera.?

So, with Photo?Sphere-like features possibly confirmed on the S4, we can also throw some money down on the device shipping with Android 4.2, unlike someone else?s flagship that was announced recently. Attention OEM?s, if you are making a flagship currently, you best be using Android 4.2+.

Surprise: GOP?s Violence Against Women Act Excludes LGBT Victims

House Speaker John Boehner crying about something not important. (Getty Images)

House Speaker John Boehner crying about something that isn?t violence against women. (Getty Images)

Surprising exactly no one,?House Republicans released a watered-down version of the Violence Against Women Act on Friday that fails to guarantee equal coverage for LGBT victims of domestic violence. Where the bipartisan VAWA bill?that cleared the Senate last week?granted access to federal grants for LGBT victims, the 288-page bill? House version contains?some notable changes.?HuffPost reports:

The House GOP bill entirely leaves out provisions aimed at helping LGBT victims of domestic violence. Specifically, the bill removes ?sexual orientation? and ?gender identity? from the list of underserved populations who face barriers to accessing victim services, thereby disqualifying LGBT victims from a related grant program. The bill also eliminates a requirement in the Senate bill that programs that receive funding under VAWA provide services regardless of a person?s sexual orientation or gender identity. Finally, the bill excludes the LGBT community from the STOP program, the largest VAWA grant program, which gives funds to care providers who work with law enforcement officials to address domestic violence.

Single-handedly keeping Kleenex? in business, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) was unable find the time to release a statement about the bill. Similarly, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) stayed mum, but his spokeswoman Megan Whittemore said the GOP leader is ?committed to ending violence against all women.?

Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), a chief advocate for VAWA in the Senate, blasted the House bill as a ?non-starter? and urged moderate Republicans to take action: ?It?s not a compromise, it?s an unfortunate effort to exclude specific groups of women from receiving basic protections under the law? The protections included in the Senate for new communities of women are not bargaining chips that can be played with in order to appease the far right in their party. These are badly needed new tools to give women an escape from a life stunted by abuse? It?s time for moderate Republicans in the House to step up and finally force their leadership to stop ignoring the calls of women across the country.?

The House is?expected to vote on the new measure next week.

Telecom giants China Mobile and Deutsche Telekom join Via Licensing?s LTE patent pool

Patent pool administrator Via Licensing has announced that China Mobile and Deutsche Telekom, two of the world?s largest telecommunications companies,?have joined its LTE patent group.

Via, a subsidiary of Dolby Labs, first formed the pool back in October 12 with ten members: AT&T, Clearwire Corporation, DTVG Licensing, HP, KDDI Corporation, NTT DOCOMO, SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telef?nica, and ZTE Corporation.

Members, which must themselves hold LTE-related intellectual property, agree to license all of their standard-essential patents to the pool and receive rights to its intellectual property in a single transaction. With the addition of the most recent two companies, Via believes its initiative represents about 15-20% of the available essential LTE patents.

?The wireless industry is known for delivering significant innovation, but it is often affected by costly patent litigation and a lack of predictability surrounding the cost and availability of essential IP,? Deutsche Telekom CTO Bruno Jacobfeuerborn said in a statement. ?We are pleased to participate with Via in a collaborative effort to deliver efficient and cost-effective access to LTE standard-essential patents.?

Via Licensing?s endeavor is an important one, as it could help the industry avoid a patent showdown over LTE. The pool has attracted fewer members than originally anticipated, but Via says it is actively recruiting for the group.

As the world?s largest carrier with over 700 million subscribers, China Mobile?s participation is also significant. The carrier has been slower to the third-generation of wireless data, as it went with a proprietary standard for its 3G network. As of January, it had almost 95 million 3G customers, or about 13% penetration.

The Chinese government is making preparations for the jump to LTE, and the country?s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has said it will be ready to begin issuing licenses and allocating frequency by the end of this year. China Mobile?s entrance to Via?s patent pool can thus be seen as a crucial step in the carrier?s own preparations for the move to 4G.

According to Via?s Director of Licensing John Ehler, China Mobile brings plenty to the table as it joins the program.

?China Mobile has been fairly active in producing patents. We find their endorsement of the patent pool to be significant because of the strength that?s coming out of China. It?s an interesting and important step to have a patent pool participated by these major Chinese players,? he told The Next Web in an interview.

Chinese telecommunications equipment maker and handset vendor ZTE was one of the initial members of the patent pool.

Ross also noted that, in his twenty years of working with patent pools, this is the first to have such significant participation of Chinese industry players during the formation stage.

Via first dipped into the patent pool business with a consortium of MPEG2, MPEG4 and AAC licensors. Along the way, it?s branched out to broadcast and wireless patent pools, leading up to its decision to create a group for the LTE standard. Since Via doesn?t itself have an IP stake in the pool, it?s able to administrate it as a third-party.

Canada?s priciest home, a $38-million teardown in West Vancouver

The most expensive house in Canada

Remember when we told you that some housing experts were predicting ?stubborn sellers? would prevent a real estate market collapse in Canada? Well, the case of the most expensive house in the country may be the perfect example of that:

?The price of a West Vancouver waterfront property has gone up from $30-million to $38-million even though it failed to sell when first listed in 2011,? reads an article in Wednesday?s National Post.

And the listing agent admits the 49-year-old home is a dated teardown with ?no value.?

?This spectacular property has the potential to be subdivided into three waterfront properties with brand new 8,000-square-foot mansions with triple car garages, infinity pools and up to 32-foot boat garages,? reads the Re/Max listing for ?Seaside Mansion on the Pointe? at 3810 Marine Drive in West Vancouver.

If you do have the cash and the impetus to buy the home, according to the North Shore Outlook, you?d be doing the neighbours a favour.

??3810 Marine Drive has for years been a thorn in the side of some neighbourhood residents, drawing complaints about garbage strewn around the property and derelict cars in the driveway,? the paper explains. ?The property?s owners are routinely cited by West Vancouver District for contravening the municipality?s Good Neighbour Bylaw for unsightly and nuisance premises.?

Here?s the Google Street View of the home?s entrance:

Of course, the?incredibly high price tag?cannot be?ascribed to the 5,500-square-foot?home itself. The real value comes from the waterfront property and its 180 degree views that stretch from downtown Vancouver to Vancouver Island.

3810 Marine Drive's west-facing view.

3810 Marine Drive?s west-facing view.

And in case you?re wondering what the house cost when it was build in 1964?

?A quick search of the West Vancouver Archives reveals that when Kenneth Hamilton White built the home in 1964, the land was then valued at $25,670 and the new house at $13,950, for a total property value of $39,620,? the North Shore Outlook explains.

The area also has dismal Walk Score of five (out of a hundred). But who cares, right? If you have $38 million to spend, you can probably afford a Segway.

Playstation 4 Unveiled: Sony Announces Next-Generation Video Game Console

NEW YORK ? Sony's next-generation gaming system, the PlayStation 4, promises social and remote capabilities. The new controller resembles that of the PlayStation 3, but adds a touchpad and a "share" button.

The Japanese electronics giant said the console will be part of a new ecosystem focused on hardware, software and "the fastest, most powerful gaming network."

Wednesday's announcement gives Sony a head start over Microsoft and an Xbox 360 successor.

The PlayStation 4 will be Sony Corp.'s first major game console since the PlayStation 3 went on sale in 2006. Microsoft Corp. is expected to unveil the next Xbox in June at the E3 video game expo in Los Angeles. Last fall, Nintendo started selling the Wii U, though it plays catch-up in some respects in bringing the ability to play high-definition games.

Although the Xbox 360 came out a year before PlayStation 3, Microsoft's game machine has been more popular, largely because of its robust online service, Xbox Live, which allows people to play games with others online. The original Wii has sold more units since its launch than both its rivals, but it lost momentum as the novelty of its motion controller faded. Sales of the new Wii U have been slow.

Underscoring the importance of a new PlayStation and the U.S. market, Sony held the announcement event in New York rather than in Japan, as it had in the past.

Here's a running account of the PlayStation event, presented in reverse chronological order. All times are EST. Presenters include Andrew House, president and group chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.; Mark Cerny, lead architect for the PlayStation 4; and David Perry, co-founder of the Internet game company Gaikai, which Sony bought last year.

___

8:05 p.m.

The event wraps up without Sony showing off the device or saying anything about price or availability, other than to say on the screen "holiday 2013." The event focused on the new console's social and remote features and games that are being developed for it.

___

7:50 p.m.

Sony continues to bring game developers on stage to talk about upcoming releases and plans for the PlayStation 4. Video from the various games is shown on the giant screen.

___

7:40 p.m.

More than an hour and a half into the presentation, Sony has yet to show the PlayStation 4 machine. There's no word yet on price or release date, though availability isn't likely for several months.

___

7:30 p.m.

It's 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Tokyo, and the event is being streamed live at Sony's website.

Yoshinori Ono from Japanese game maker Capcom addresses the audience in Japanese, with a translator offering the remarks in English.

___

7:25 p.m.

Beyond games, Sony is touting the PlayStation 4's fast graphical capabilities. You'd be able to create animation in 3-D using a Move motion controller ? all in real time.

___

7:15 p.m.

Another game showcased was "The Witness." It's a puzzle game that explores an abandoned island. It will be developed exclusively for the PlayStation 4.

___

7 p.m.

Among the offerings planned: "Drive Club." An executive from Evolution Studios says it's been a concept for a decade, but made possible with the new machine. The game will be about driving the best cars in the world in the best locations in the world, using 3-D models of engines built by the development team.

___

6:50 p.m.

The event continues with demonstration of games that can be played on the new PlayStation.

___

6:45 p.m.

Like Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony is trying to position its device as an entertainment hub that can deliver movies, music and social networking as it tries to stay relevant in the age of smartphones and tablets.

The PlayStation online network will have access to Sony's video and music services, as well as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon ? as long as you have subscriptions to those services. You'll also be able to access Facebook.

___

6:40 p.m.

Perry talks about Gaikai's vision of letting people explore any game in the PlayStation store for free. The idea is gamers will then buy what they like.

He says PlayStation 4 will allow for virtual spectating. With one button, you can broadcast your game play so friends can "look over your shoulder virtually."

It will have a feature called remote play, in which you run the game on the PlayStation, which then sends the video to your handheld PlayStation Vita device over the Internet so you can play remotely.

___

6:30 p.m.

Cerny says the new PlayStation will have hardware compression so sharing video of game play will be easier. You can browse live game video of games your friends are playing.

Adopting Facebook's philosophy, Sony will transition to an online game network based on real names, even as people will also be able to keep their aliases.

___

6:25 p.m.

Cerny appears in a plaid shirt and jeans as he touts the ease in which computer programmers will be able to write games for the new system. He says that with so many devices around, the value of having a powerful computer on a single chip has diminished. Instead, Sony is building the new PlayStation on top of a traditional PC architecture, and in doing so, game creators will have an easier time developing games.

___

6:10 p.m.

Just before announcing the PlayStation 4, House refers to "a moment of truth and a bold step forward for PlayStation and the company." He says Sony is looking to offer powerful opportunities to connect and play, including on mobile through a companion PlayStation Vita released last year.

___

6 p.m.

The PlayStation event begins with a light and video show at the storied Hammerstein Ballroom in midtown Manhattan. In attendance are analysts and journalists representing news organizations around the world.

App Test Platform TestFlight Comes To Android In Private Beta, Says 300K Apps Uploaded On iOS

testflight logoOver the past couple of years, TestFlight has become the standard choice for giving beta testers (and tech bloggers) early access to iOS apps. Today the service is launching for Android developers too ? including cross-platform developers who already use TestFlight on iOS. As an iPhone owner, I'm less familiar with the Android app ecosystem, but I have heard that there isn't as big a need for something like TestFlight. In an email interview, co-founder Ben Satterfield acknowledged that "over the air distribution on Android isn't a pain point like it is on iOS," but he said that TestFlight has received more than 10,000 requests for Android support from developers.

Renewed fervor for Google lifts stock above $800

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google's stock price topped $800 for the first time Tuesday amid renewed confidence in the company's ability to reap higher profits from its dominance of Internet search and prominence in the growing mobile market.

The milestone comes more than five years after Google's shares initially hit $700. Not long after breaking that barrier in October 2007, the economy collapsed into the worst recession since World War II and Google's stock tumbled into a prolonged malaise that eventually led to a change in leadership.

Besides enriching Google's employees and other shareholders, the company's resurgent stock is an implicit endorsement of co-founder Larry Page. He replaced his managerial mentor, Eric Schmidt, as CEO in April 2011. Google's stock has risen by 36 percent since Page took over. By contrast, the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index has climbed by 15 percent over the same stretch.

Most of Google's gains have occurred in the past seven months ? a period that has overlapped with a sharp downturn in the stock price of rival Apple Inc. The iPhone maker's market value has plunged by about $230 billion, or 35 percent, since late September.

"All that Apple money had to go somewhere," said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis.

Standard & Poor's Capital IQ analyst Scott Kessler concurred, reasoning that many investors who have abandoned Apple are gravitating to one of its biggest rivals.

Google makes and distributes its free Android software to Samsung Electronics Co., HTC Corp. and other mobile device makers looking to compete with Apple's iPhone and iPad. Since its 2008 introduction, Android has established itself as the most popular mobile operating system, partly because the free software makes it easier for device makers to undercut Apple's prices for iPhones and iPads.

Android is set up to feature Google's search engine and other services, giving the company a chance to sell more ads.

"If you are looking at Apple's peers in its space and see who seems to be really doing well right now, it makes a lot of sense to invest in Google now," Kessler said.

Despite its diminished luster, Apple remains the most valuable U.S. company with a market value of $432 billion. Google now ranks third with a market value of $266 billion, with Exxon Mobil Corp. holding the spot in between at $402 billion.

Google's stock climbed $13.96, or 1.8 percent, to close Tuesday at $806.85.

Analysts who follow Google still see room for some modest gains. The stock's average price target among analysts surveyed by FactSet now stands at $834.40. Five of the 37 polled analysts are predicting Google's stock will surpass $900 within the next year.

"There are probably even going to be people talking whether Google's stock can get to $1,000," Kessler said. "Never underestimate the excitement that can be caused by a rising stock market and a rising security."

Gillis warned that Google's stock might retreat within the next six weeks, based on historical trading patterns. During the first quarter in each of the past five years, Google's stock has declined by at least 10 percent from its peak price within the three-month period. The trend may have something to do with the opening three months of the year being a traditionally sluggish period for advertising, according to Gillis.

"I fully expect investors to have another opportunity to buy Google's stock at prices below $800," Gillis said. His price target on Google remains at $760.

The significance of crossing the $800 threshold is largely symbolic. If Google had its way, the stock wouldn't even be priced near these levels.

The company, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., had hoped to split its stock last year in a move that would have at least temporarily halved the trading price by doubling the total number of outstanding shares. But the proposed stock split was put on hold until Google resolves a shareholder lawsuit alleging that the stock split unfairly cedes too much power to Page and fellow co-founder Sergey Brin. Page and Brin have been the company's largest shareholders since its inception. A trial on the lawsuit is scheduled to begin June 17 in a Delaware state court.

Assuming more investors wouldn't have rushed to buy more Google stock just because it split, the company's market value probably wouldn't have changed from its current level.

There is little dispute among analysts that Google appears well positioned for many years of prosperity for these reasons:

? Its Internet search engine remains the hub of the Web's biggest marketing network;

? Its YouTube video site has established itself as an increasingly attractive advertising vehicle and could broaden its reach as more people get Internet-connected televisions;

? Its Android software is running on more than 600 million smartphones and tablet computers, creating new advertising opportunities.

Google already dominates mobile advertising, with its U.S. revenue from that business expected to approach $4 billion this year, up 84 percent from nearly $2.2 billion in 2012, according to the research firm eMarketer. Google commands a 55 percent share of the mobile ad market, based on eMarketer's estimates. Google doesn't disclose how much of its $44 billion in annual worldwide ad revenue comes from mobile devices.

Some investors have raised concerns that mobile ads have been commanding lower prices than ads on regular Web pages, reducing the average rate for ads. The company is trying to address that with a revamped ad system that will prod more marketers to buy mobile ads when they are creating campaigns for desktop and laptop computers. That, Google hopes, will raise demand and thus prices.

Opinions about Google weren't as upbeat a few years ago. Although Google weathered the Great Recession better than most companies, its revenue growth slowed and its stock plummeted to as low as $247.30 near the end of 2008.

Things looked so bleak in 2009 that Google took the rare step of re-pricing stock options that had been doled out to its employees to give them a chance to make more money when the shares rebounded. The program allowed Google workers to swap their old stock options for new ones with an exercise price of about $308. The employees who have held on to the re-priced options would make nearly $500 per option if they were to exercise them now.

Although he didn't receive any of those re-priced options, Schmidt is poised to pocket a huge windfall by selling 42 percent of the shares that he owns in the company during the next year. The 3.2 million that Schmidt, now Google's executive chairman, has earmarked for sale are currently worth about $2.6 billion. Google says the stock sales are part of Schmidt's strategy to diversify his investment portfolio so less of his wealth is locked up in the company.

Even after the economy snapped out of the recession toward the end of 2009, Google's stock began to lag the rest of the market. Investors began to wonder if the company was losing its competitive age as it morphed from a hard-charging startup to giant organization with thousands of employees working in dozens of offices scattered around the world.

At the same time, Facebook was emerging as the Internet's fastest growing company in a meteoric rise. The social networking company had some people convinced it would eventually become a more important advertising vehicle than Google's search engine.

Perceptions have changed since Page became CEO. Under Page's leadership, Google has streamlined its decision-making and operations while closing dozens of its less popular services. It established its own toehold in social networking with the 2011 introduction of Google Plus.

Meanwhile, Facebook Inc. so far hasn't lived up to the hyperbole that that made its initial public offering of stock one of the biggest in U.S. history. Since going public at $38, Facebook's stock has sunk 24 percent.

By contrast, Google's stock has never slipped below its August 2004 IPO price of $85.

I Love You, Man: Gates Lashes Himself to Ballmer Over Microsoft's Mobile "Mistake" (Video)

url

In a wide-ranging interview with Charlie Rose on ?CBS This Morning,? Microsoft Chairman and co-founder Bill Gates made a little news ? or a lot of it, if you are a reader of internal tea leaves at the software giant ? in noting that the company?s early mobile strategy was ?clearly a mistake.?

But, perhaps more interestingly, when asked about the meh performance of Steve Ballmer, who replaced Gates as CEO some years ago, the typically non-diplomatic tech legend declined to throw his longtime confident over the side.

Instead, he strapped himself to Ballmer, in an orgy of ?he-and-I,? band-of-brothers statements that clearly linked the duo, even though Rose?s question was specifically about how Ballmer was doing.

?He and I are two of the most self-critical people you can imagine,? said Gates, noting a lot of ?amazing things? such as Surface and Xbox in the Ballmer regime. ?Is it enough? No, he and I are not satisfied that in terms of breakthrough things that we?re doing everything possible.?

Gates did note the obvious in addressing the slowness of Microsoft in the mobile market over the last several years, which has allowed rivals like Apple and Google to dominate the key sector.

?There?s a lot of things like cellphones where we didn?t get out in the lead early,? said Gates. ?We didn?t miss cellphones, but the way that we went about it didn?t allow us to get the leadership.?

'Simplified' brain lets the iCub robot learn language

Feb. 18, 2013 ? The iCub humanoid robot on which the team directed by Peter Ford Dominey, CNRS Director of Research at Inserm Unit 846* has been working for many years will now be able to understand what is being said to it and even anticipate the end of a sentence.

This technological prowess was made possible by the development of a "simplified artificial brain" that reproduces certain types of so-called "recurrent" connections observed in the human brain. The artificial brain system enables the robot to learn, and subsequently understand, new sentences containing a new grammatical structure. It can link two sentences together and even predict how a sentence will end before it is uttered. This research has been published in the journal PLoS One.

Inserm and CNRS researchers and the Universit? Lyon 1 have succeeded in developing an "artificial neuronal network" constructed on the basis of a fundamental principle of the workings of the human brain, namely its ability to learn a new language. The model was developed after years of research in the Inserm 846 Unit of the Institut de recherche sur les cellules souches et cerveau, through studying the structure of the human brain and understanding the mechanisms used for learning.

One of the most remarkable aspects of language-processing is the speed at which it is performed. For example, the human brain processes the first words of a sentence in real time and anticipates what follows, thus improving the speed with which humans process information. Still in real time, the brain continually revises its predictions through interaction between new information and a previously created context. The region inside the brain linking the frontal cortex and the striatum plays a crucial role in this process.

Based on this research, Peter Ford Dominey and his team have developed an "artificial brain" that uses a "neuronal construction" similar to that used by the human brain. Thanks to so-called recurrent construction (with connections that create locally recurring loops) this artificial brain system can understand new sentences having a new grammatical structure. It is capable of linking two sentences and can even predict the end of a sentence before it is provided.

To put this advance into a real-life situation, the Inserm researchers incorporated this new brain into the iCub humanoid robot.

In a video demonstration, a researcher asks the iCub robot to point to a guitar (shown in the form of blue object) then asking it to move a violin to the left (shown by a red object). Before performing the task, the robot repeats the sentence and explains that it has fully understood what it has been asked to do.

For researchers, the contribution that this makes to research into certain diseases is of major importance. This system can be used to understand better the way in which the brain processes language. "We know that when an unexpected word occurs in a sentence, the brain reacts in a particular way. These reactions could hitherto be recorded by sensors placed on the scalp," explains Peter Ford Dominey.

The model developed by Dr Xavier Hinaut and Dr Peter Ford Dominey makes it possible to identify the source of these responses in the brain. If this model, based on the organisation of the cerebral cortex, is accurate, it could contribute to possible linguistic malfunctions in Parkinson's disease.

This research has another important implication, that of contributing to the ability of robots to learn a language one day. "At present, engineers are simply unable to program all of the knowledge required in a robot. We now know that the way in which robots acquire their knowledge of the world could be partially achieved through a learning process -- in the same way as children", explains Peter Ford Dominey.

The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel in London

Finally, some hotel business from London has made it to Luxatic, and it has done it in style. We?re now featuring the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, located between the famous Knightsbridge and Hyde park, right in central London. The spot is a gorgeous place to do some sightseeing and shopping.

Found nearby are the Westminster and Kensington Palace, while a plethora of shopping destinations like Harvey Nichols and Harrods are just the throw of a stick away. Furthermore, I bet many of our readers would love to see the Household Cavalry marching down the royal park, towards Buckingham Palace.

Aside from the impressive presence, the building also includes staggering suites and rooms, all appointed to nearly royal levels. Each of the rooms at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park London is unique, creating a gorgeous atmosphere alongside the hotel?s extensive range of luxurious fabrics, art collections and antiquities. The local award-winning spa provides customizable treatments from feet to the top of your head.

In addition, culinary-wise, guests may choose two of the most impressive dining spots in London. Bar Boulud is the first, boasting with a superbly stocked wine cellar and an entire collection of beers from all over the world, all adding to exquisite French cuisine. The experienced hands of Heston Blumenthal are also ready to take your taste buds to unseen places, reminding of Britain?s majestic gastronomic history.

Ultimately, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park London is situated just an hour away from Heathrow International Airport. One can make this journey through either taxi, car, train or even underground. The Gatwick Airport is way closer, though. Nightly rates start at ?325 (or $504).

Memory appears susceptible to eradication of fear responses

Feb. 18, 2013 ? Fear responses can only be erased when people learn something new while retrieving the fear memory. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by scientists from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and published in the journal Science.

Researchers Dieuwke Sevenster MSc, Dr Tom Beckers and Prof. Merel Kindt have developed a method to determine whether an acquired fear response is susceptible to modification. By doing so, they have revealed the circumstances under which an acquired fear response can be eradicated. In order to measure whether a person actually learnt something new, the researchers used a measure for Prediction Error -- in other words, the discrepancy between a person's anticipation of what is going to happen and what actually happens.

No fear response

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is currently the most common and effective type of treatment for people suffering from anxiety disorders. However, the effects are often short-lived and the fear returns in many patients. One major finding of Van Kindt's research lab is that when participants were given propranolol, a beta blocker, while retrieving a specific fear memory, the acquired fear response was shown to be totally erased a day or month later. The researchers repeatedly found that the fear did not come back, despite the use of techniques specifically aimed to make it return. This indicates that the fear memory was either fully eradicated, or could no longer be accessed. One crucial finding was that while participants could still remember the association with the fear, that particular memory no longer triggered the former fear response.

Fear conditioning

For their study the researchers used a fear conditioning procedure in which a specific picture was followed by a nasty painful stimulus. While the participants viewed the pictures, the researchers measured the anticipation of the painful stimulus as well as the more autonomous fear response on the basis of the startle reflex.

The current findings will contribute to the further development of more effective and efficient therapies for patients suffering from excessive anxiety disorders, such as trauma victims. There was no independent measure to indicate whether the memory is susceptible to modification up until now. The researchers have shown that the fear response can be eradicated completely, provided that the person concerned actually learns something new while retrieving the fear memory.

Brussels, Feb 18:??

Britain, apparently backed by a handful of European Union allies, is fighting to lift an EU arms embargo barring the supply of weapons to the Syrian rebel coalition battling President Bashar al-Assad.

As EU foreign ministers go into a daylong meeting on the issue today, the internal row remains unresolved despite weeks of talks that diplomats from member states describe as both ?difficult? and ?divisive?.

But time is running out to resolve the dispute.

The EU?s wide-ranging sanctions against Syria, including the arms ban but also targeting scores of Assad cronies and regime-friendly firms, as well as oil, trade and finance, expire at the end of the month and a deal to renew the package requires unanimity.

Britain and France had seen the March 1 deadline as an opportunity to respond to requests for weaponry by the opposition.

But France appears to have cooled, leaving Britain facing opposition from Germany, Sweden and even the EU?s foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton, a British baroness who represents London on the European Commission.

?Delivering arms might bring about a new military balance on the ground,? said an internal paper on the matter drafted for the member states by Ashton?s service.

?But it could also fuel further militarisation of the conflict, increase risks of dissemination among extremist groups and of arms proliferation in a post-Assad Syria,? said the paper, which was obtained by AFP.

Among options on the table are restricting the embargo to the Syrian Government, exempting members of the opposition Syrian National Coalition from the arms ban, or amending it to allow some weapons to be delivered with a view to increasing the protection of civilian populations.

?There is a real question here,? said a senior EU diplomat speaking on condition of anonymity. ?But is this the right moment given the current efforts to push a political settlement??

UN peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi was supposed to attend today?s talks with the EU ministers but had to pull out as efforts mount to make good an offer from opposition leader Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib to negotiate with some regime figures.

?In today?s political context, would this be an appropriate measure?? added the diplomat.

Just over a week ago, French President Francois Hollande ruled out lifting the arms embargo for the time being, saying this could only happen ?if we?re sure there are no further possibilities of political dialogue.?

Minister says relocating Liquor Distribution Warehouse ... - Cknw

Shane Woodford | Email news tips to shane.woodford@corusent.com
2/16/2013

?It?s not entirely about the money,? says the minister responsible as the province looks at relocating the Liquor Distribution Warehouse in Vancouver.

Rich Coleman says the current building is not tall enough and the operation could become more efficient in a new updated facility.

But Coleman also admits the real estate it is sitting on is worth a few bucks and the Province might look at selling it after the move.

Asked if they have a new location locked down Coleman said:

?"No we will ask the real estate market to give us some options as to what is out there we are hoping to find something that is already purpose built rather than having to wait but we don't know what the market is yet. We wanted to make a decision on the move first and then now we will go to the market and have them make a proposal to us."

The BC Government and Employees Union says the Province just wants to sell the land and use the dollars to balance the government books.

Alcohol: a heart disease-cancer balancing act - Harvard Health ...

The message that drinking a little alcohol is good for the heart has gotten plenty of attention. A new study linking alcohol with increased risk of dying from various cancers may temper that message a bit.

About 4% of cancer deaths worldwide are related to alcohol use. No one has done a major study of this issue in the United States for more than 30 years. During that time, we?ve learned a lot about alcohol and cancer, and powerful statistical methods have been developed for estimating risk.

Researchers from the National Cancer Institute and other institutions delved into many studies and information databases. They calculated that alcohol causes 3.5% of U.S. cancer deaths, or about 20,000 cancer-related deaths each year. The study was published online yesterday in the American Journal of Public Health.

The most common alcohol-related cancers were mouth, throat, and esophageal cancer in men, and breast cancer in women.

Experts still aren?t completely sure how alcohol causes cancer. Possibilities include:

  • toxic effects from chemicals produced when the body breaks down alcohol
  • increased production of cell- and DNA-damaging free radicals
  • changes in the way the body handles vitamin B6 (folic acid)
  • boosting estrogen levels, which can increase the risk of breast and other cancers
  • making other cancer causing agents, such as tobacco products, more harmful

Heart benefits

But what about the reduced risk of heart related deaths in people that drink a little alcohol compared to those that don?t drink at all? A recent detailed analysis of 84 of the best studies looking at the alcohol and heart connection included more than two million men and women. They were followed for an average of 11 years. Compared to people who didn?t drink alcohol, those who were moderate drinkers had a

  • 29% lower risk of being diagnosed with coronary artery disease
  • 25% lower risk of dying from a heart attack
  • 25% lower risk of dying from any heart or blood vessel disease
  • 13% lower risk of dying from any cause (this included cancer deaths, too)

Moderate drinking is defined as no more than two alcoholic drinks a day for men and no more than one a day for women.

Striking a balance

The idea that alcohol can be bad and good isn?t a new one. We?ve known for ages that alcohol?usually too much alcohol?can cause liver problems, is a key contributor to automobile accidents and deaths, and can harm personal relationships. The new study adds cancer to alcohol?s potential harms. But moderate alcohol consumption also appears to reduce the odds of developing or dying from heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States.

If you don?t drink alcohol now, there?s no reason to start. But also don?t worry if you occasionally have a drink.

If you do enjoy alcohol, keep your drinking in the moderate range. You don?t get any additional heart protection by drinking more. And your risk of cancer?and many other problems?rises dramatically with higher consumption.

The issue of whether or not to drink alcohol can be a very tricky one for a woman at higher than average risk of breast cancer or one worried about developing breast cancer. Not drinking would eliminate one possible contributor to breast cancer risk. At the same time, heart disease is more common and deadly among women than breast cancer. An increased heart disease risk might tilt the balance toward moderate alcohol use.

Advances in genetics may one day let us predict more accurately who can use alcohol in moderation and who should avoid it completely. Until then, it?s best to personally weigh the benefits and risks, ideally with a trusted health care provider.

Maintaining 21st Century Relationships Takes More than Romance ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor

Maintaining 21st Century Relationships Takes More than RomanceA new study suggest helping with the dishes, rather than giving roses, may be a better way to enhance a 21st century relationship.

While this may seem sacrilegious after Valentine?s Day, the new Open University study finds that the things that keep couples together often include small acts of compasssion.

Researchers discovered simple acts of kindness ranging from taking out the trash to bringing a cup of coffee to?bed, to telling someone they look good naked, are cited as relationship savers by the 4,000-plus adults in the UK who took part in the Enduring Love online survey.

Researchers say the results from the survey on couple relationships showed a whole host of ways that participants described how their partner makes them feel appreciated and loved, with simply saying ?thank you? and thoughtful gestures being prized most highly.

Participants also noted plenty of irritations they felt in their relationships. Grumbles such as snoring, noisy eating and stacking the dishwasher badly might lead one to think a Valentine?s card would be unceremoniously tossed, yet these were all part and parcel of ongoing 21st century relationships.

Among the findings, the survey revealed that non-heterosexual parents do more relationship maintenance than their heterosexual counterparts and indeed, lesbian and gay participants were shown to be more positive and happier with their relationship and with their partner in general.

There were, however, no significant differences between heterosexual and non-heterosexual participants in their happiness with life.

Researchers discovered mothers are more negative about relationship quality, relationship with partner, relationship maintenance and happiness with relationship/partner than childless women. But?mothers are significantly happier with life that any other group, indicating that children could perhaps be the primary source of happiness for women.

Mothers are also almost twice more likely than fathers to say that their children are the most important people in their life.

Fathers are much more likely than mothers to value their partners as the most important person. The survey also revealed how sharing values, a faith, beliefs or interests with a partner is very highly regarded and participants expressed disappointment when the everyday experiences of life could not be shared.

?Holding things in common was seen by participants as a key ?connector? in the couple relationship,? said Janet Fink, Ph.D., co-lead researcher on the Enduring Love project.? ?And it was clear that long-term relationships appear to endure through a blend of practical and emotional labor,? she added.

In addition, the survey asked whether a stressful situation (experienced in the last two years) ? such as a house move, bereavement or redundancy ? may have impacted adversely on their relationship.

In fact, responses from participants showed the opposite and suggest that both parents and childless couples might pull together through such difficult life events.

?The more events participants reported, the higher their scores on our three measures of relationship quality, partner relationship and relationship maintenance,? said Jacqui Gabb, Ph.D.,?co-lead researcher on the project.

The study ? which is just past the halfway point ? involves two levels of research, gleaned firstly from an online quantitative survey, completed by 4,212 adults? long-term relationships in the UK. This is complemented by a second strand of qualitative research undertaken with 50 couples, aged between 18 and 65, with children and without.

The overall aim is to develop a picture of what a 21st century long-term relationship looks like and to examine the emotional and practical work that couples do to sustain their relationship.

Researchers were encouraged by the high survey response rate.

?The level of interest in this survey did take us by surprise, but reflects the fascination with the topic of relationships and in ?self-help? culture.

?We found that whilst participants do appear to seek help with their relationship ? whether that is from friends and relations or other professional sources, they are also employing their own methods to keep their relationship on track.?
