Conaway Faces 'Crucial' Survival Fight

Actor Jeff Conaway is entering a crucial 48-hour period in his fight for survival, according to his manager.

The Grease star, who played bad boy Kenickie in the hit musical, has been hospitalised since 11 May, when he was found unconscious amid initial reports of a drug overdose. It later emerged that Conaway was battling pneumonia and sepsis, a potentially fatal blood poisoning caused by a bacterial infection.

The star's manager Phil Brock confirmed on Monday the next 48 hours will be crucial for Conaway, who is still in a critical condition.

The 60 year old, who has famously battled drink and drug problems, has been placed in a medically induced coma to aid his recovery at the Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center in California.

In systemic chemotherapy, the drugs can either be injected into the blood stream or taken orally. In regional chemotherapy however, the drugs are placed directly on the body cavity, spinal column or the affected organ.

Just like in radiotherapy, the treatment approaches in chemotherapy mainly depend on severity of the cancer, the type and development stage of the disease In hormone therapy, specific hormones are removed from the body or their fnctions blocked to try and stop the cancerous cells from developing. One such treatment method is ovarian ablation which stopsprevents the ovaries from making estrogen. Other hormone therapy treatment plans have tamoxifen and aromatose inhibitors. Using drugs that identify and attack cancerous cells only without damaging normal cells is called targetted therapy. Two common drugs for targetted therapy include Tyrosine-Kinase inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies. No matter the type of breast pain treatment that is used on a person, routine medical check-ups will be essential later on in order to determine whether the cancer medication managed to eradicate the disease fully.

MPAA Head Christopher Dodd to Visit, Address Shanghai Film Festival

BEIJING ? Former US Senator Christopher Dodd will give the keynote address at a film co-production forum on June 13 at the Shanghai International Film Festival as his first act in Asia in his new role as head of the Hollywood lobby the Motion Picture Association of America.

According to an MPAA official, Dodd, who joined the group in March, will make his first trip to China as the chief lobbyist for the interests of Hollywood?s big six studios at a time when China, the world?s fastest-growing movie market, appears to have ignored an international order to open its markets to more imported films.

By a March 19 World Trade Organization deadline, China was supposed to have allowed greater foreign participation in the distribution of imported copyrighted cultural content such as films, music and books.

Dodd already implicitly has criticized China by coming aboard at the MPAA with a strong anti-piracy message and one that advocates the opening of market access around the world to Hollywood films. China currently limits to 20 per year the number of film imports allowed to share in a percentage of the box office.

Dodd will spend a day and a half in Shanghai, where Rain Man director Barry Levinson will lead the festival?s main competition jury and News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch will give the keynote address at a film financing forum.?

Next, Dodd, the former Democratic Senator from Connecticut, will travel to Beijing where he will meet with the state-run monopoly film importer the China Film Group and with officials from the Film Bureau and the State Administration of Radio Film and Television.

Yoga helps breast cancer patients: study (AFP) | WorldNews

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? Breast cancer patients who practice yoga experience lower stress and improved quality of life compared to counterparts who do stretching exercises, a US study indicated Wednesday.

Researchers at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center studied 163 women with an average age of 52 who were undergoing radiation therapy for breast cancer, ranging from early onset to stage three.

The women were randomly assigned to one of three groups ? yoga, simple stretching and no instruction in either.

Those assigned to yoga or stretching practiced in one-hour sessions three times a week for the duration of the six-week radiation therapy.

At the end of their radiation treatment, they were asked to report on their own health and well-being at one, three and six months after treatment, and they also underwent tests to measure heart function and stress hormone levels.

Women in the yoga and stretching groups each reported less fatigue than the non-exercise group.

But women who did yoga reported ?greater benefits to physical functioning and general health? (and) were more likely to perceive positive life changes from their cancer experience than either other group.?

The yoga group also saw the ?steepest decline in their cortisol across the day, indicating that yoga had the ability to regulate this stress hormone,? the study said.

?This is particularly important because higher stress hormone levels throughout the day, known as a blunted circadian cortisol rhythm, have been linked to worse outcomes in breast cancer.?

The study was carried out at US sites, and the yoga practice techniques and instructors were provided by India?s largest yoga research institution, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana in Bangalore.

Lead author Lorenzo Cohen said yoga likely helped patients deal with the transition from cancer treatment back to regular life.

?The transition from active therapy back to everyday life can be very stressful as patients no longer receive the same level of medical care and attention,? Cohen said.

?Teaching patients a mind-body technique like yoga as a coping skill can make the transition less difficult.?

The researchers are working on a phase III clinical trial to further study how yoga may lead to better physical functioning in breast cancer patients.

A separate study released last month suggested that regular yoga practice by cardiac patients was able to cut irregular heartbeat episodes in half.

Mayor Responds To Real Property Tax Numbers - Maui's Weekly Online ...

WAILUKU, Maui, Hawaii ? Today Mayor Alan Arakawa recognized the efforts of the Department of Finance to work with delinquent tax payers.

This fiscal year the Finance Department?s Real Property Tax Division collected just over $6,000,000 in delinquent taxes, penalty and interest. While the tax collection is significant the mayor said it is more important that County employees took the time to help keep people from losing their homes to foreclosure.

??I know that department heads drove out to meet many of these delinquent tax payers at their own homes,? said Mayor Alan Arakawa. ?They took the time to sit down and explain the situation and the consequences they could face, such as losing their property.

??In many cases they avoided that worst case scenario by helping to set up payment plans.?

At the beginning of fiscal year 2010-2011, the Real Property Tax Division had a list of 232 parcels that could legally be sold at a County of Maui real property tax sale.?? The total delinquent balance of these parcels was almost $1,800,000.??

As of 5/12/2011, there were only 9 parcels on the tax sale list with a total delinquent balance of $94,350.? The Delinquent Tax Collections section of the Real Property Tax Division has been working hard all year to collect delinquent balances so that parcels do not have to be sold at auction.??

Communication with tax payers has been the most effective method of reducing the number of parcels going to auction.? If the 9 remaining parcels pay in full by May 23, 2011 the Division will cancel the tax sale.?

WASHINGTON, May 19, 2011 - AAA projects 34.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, a slight increase of 0.2 percent - or 100,000 travelers - from the 34.8 million people who traveled one year ago. The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, May 26 to Monday, May 30.

?Memorial Day travel experienced a gain of more than 14 percent in 2010, and this year we expect to add slightly to that gain due to an increase in air travel and an improvement in the overall domestic economic picture,? said AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet. ?Some travelers will compensate for the higher fuel costs by cutting other areas of their travel budgets.?

Overwhelming majority of Americans to travel by automobile, but down slightly from last year
Approximately 30.9 million people plan to drive to their destination, a small decline from the 31 million who drove last year. Almost nine out of ten holiday travelers (88 percent) will take to the nation?s roadways during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. A survey of intended travelers found that six out of ten said rising gasoline prices would not impact their travel plans. Hotel rates for AAA Three Diamond lodgings are expected to increase five percent from a year ago with travelers spending an average of $148 per night compared to $142 last year. Travelers planning to stay at AAA Two Diamond hotels can expect to pay 10 percent more with an average cost of $109 per night. Weekend daily car rental rates will average $38, just $1 higher than last year.

Average travel distance up 27 percent; median spending down 14 percent
According to a survey of traveler intentions, the average distance traveled by Americans during the Memorial Day holiday weekend is expected to be 792 miles, which is 27 percent greater than last year?s average travel distance of 626 miles. Air Travel is expected to gain a larger share of overall travel, and is likely the cause of a substantial increase in the average travel distance compared to a year ago. Median spending is expected to be $692, a decrease of 14 percent from $809 last year.

About 4 months ago I decided that it had been long enough for me to be sitting at my desk and hardly leaving the house except to shop or go to church.? Working from home definitely has its benefits, but over the last 2 years I gained about 20 pounds that was just sitting around my midsection and before I knew it, I was feeling very lazy a LOT.

Years ago I had played racquetball once or twice with a friend and it was a blast. ?I was horribly out of shape though.? I had very little stamina and was out of breath quickly. ?Plus, I really didn?t know how to play the game.

Racquet grips are important racquet accessories. The size of the grip plays an important role in a player?s ability to control the ball and lob it with force. Grips come in a range of sizes and may be anywhere between 3 5/8? to 3 5/16?. Smaller grips allow more racquet control and are recommended for players with superior wrist snap. That is why experienced players prefer small grips. This is also the reason why experts recommend that beginners should start out with small grips when they are new to the game. However, a player with large hands may not have much of a choice as they need to use a larger grip.

Fortunately, I have several friends who wanted to start with me so we got going and learned the rules (more on those in a minute).? Fortunately for us, a friend?s husband was on leave from the military and decided to play with us while he was here.? We found out at the first game that he actually played semi-professionally!? He was amazing.? He made us all look terrible, but nothing helped my game more than his tips and skills.

When you play against people who don?t know how to play, you get lazy and don?t push yourself.? Anyhow, let?s talk about the rules.

So that?s all there is to it?

Not quite. There are some other factors to consider such as balance and swingweight.

Balance helps describe how the weight of the racquet is distributed. Head heavy refers to a racquet that has it?s center of mass toward the head of the racquet. Mass further away from the lever point (your hand) requires more inertia move, but generates more power. Mass closer to your hand, allows more control, but not as much power. HEAD, Gearbox, and Wilson tend to be head heavy. Ektelon and E-Force tend to be slightly head light to slightly head heavy. ProKennex has models that are all over the place.

Swingweight is how heavy the racquet feels when swung. It is a combination of the total weight and the balance. 2 racquets can have the same swingweight even if they are different stationary weights. For instance a lighter racquet with it?s weight distributed toward the head can actually have a higher swingweight than a heavier racquet with a head light balance point. For instance the GB-250 165g and GB-250 170g have the same swingweight despite one being lighter than the other.

Here?s how you win.? Once the ball hits the back wall, it can only bounce on the floor once before it must be hit against the back wall again.? So if you hit the back wall, the ball bounces once, the other player must cause the ball to hit the back wall before it bounces again, that resets it.

So to win, just hit the ball so that the other player can?t reach it in time and it bounces more than once on the floor. ?It?s that simple, and not only is it a blast, but it?s a great way to get fit

Q&A: 'Happy Endings' Creator Addresses 'Friends' Comparisons, the bin Laden Joke and Serializing Season 2

There's something to be said for being under the radar. ABC's rookie series Happy Endings, which didn't receive the biggest marketing push prior to its early April debut, is evidence of that. Happy Endings, which?centers on a group of friends who try to navigate life after one of its couples breaks up, was one of only a handful of freshman comedies ? along with Fox's Raising Hope?and CBS? Mike & Molly?? that are returning this fall. In fact, two of its cast members had back-up plans in case the show went south: Damon Wayans Jr. and Adam Pally booked roles on Fox's New Girl?and NBC's Best Friends Forever, which were picked up to series.

The Hollywood Reporter chatted with first-time showrunner David Caspe on the eve of ABC's upfront presentation in New York City, which took place Tuesday, about Happy Endings? accidental similarities to Friends, the infamous bin Laden joke and how he plans to serialize Season 2.

[Note: On Tuesday, ABC revealed that Happy Endings would air in the post-Modern Family?slot this fall.]

The Hollywood Reporter: The show has performed solidly on Wednesday nights, so what do you think is the perfect home for Happy Endings?

Caspe: I just try and do the best I can on my end and let [the network] make all those decisions. But people seem to like [it]. It wasn't like [the show had] gigantic ratings. I hear people talk about it, which is super cool. I'm always surprised when anyone likes anything I do. To be honest, I'm so happy and thankful just to get to make more of these that I'm kind of like, "Wherever you guys want to put us, wherever you think is best, I am into it." I'm still super pumped to get to this for a living.

THR: Do you think following Modern Family?and Cougar Town?made sense?

Caspe: I think so. I think people see a similarity between us and Cougar Town?tonally. I guess we're considered somewhat edgy of a show. I think I'm probably desensitized to that slightly. I've grown up on HBO and R-rated movies to the point where I don't really feel like we're that edgy necessarily. Our goal was to do a modern take on a Friends-type show, the same way Modern Family?did a modern take on a family-type show.

THR: Happy Endings?didn?t get the splashiest debut, yet a group of viewers has formed ..

Caspe: It feels like that. It's so hard to tell. I read the Twitter stuff and I read stuff on Facebook, and it definitely feels like there's a group of people who really love the show. I'll hear people tell my mom how much they like it. I don't know how much you can trust your mom, but again, it's so hard to tell because you don't know how big that group of people is. The comments that like it are pretty effusive and the comments that don't like it are pretty effusive also. It seems like either people love it or they want me to die. [Laughs] I read everything everywhere, but I probably shouldn't. I hope it continues to be good for those people and hopefully find even more people.

THR: How did the Osama bin Laden joke [in the "Of Mice and Jazz-Kwon-Do" episode] affect the show?

Caspe: I honestly forgot about the joke entirely, then we got a call from ABC saying, "We should probably mute this just out of respect to the situation," and I agreed. It could've been that and it could've also been because it wasn't applicable anymore that they wanted to mute it. I don't think it's a particularly offensive joke; it's not really about bin Laden, it was trying to be a play on words. I actually don't think it seemed to cause that much of a stir. [Bin Laden] had been pursued for 10 years and this episode could have aired a week earlier and nothing would've mattered. We shot it six months ago and because we're not in production right now, there was no opportunity to go in and re-edit the episode. I'm sorry if it offended anyone of course.

THR: Was there another instance when the timing of an episode played a key role?

Caspe: We did an episode a week earlier or two weeks earlier that was Penny dates Doug Hitler that happened to air on Hitler's birthday, which was a coincidence. It was weird; that was not planned. That wasn't our Valentine's Day episode. I think random stuff like that happens. There was another show, Chuck, that did an Osama joke that week also.

THR: How has airing the episodes out of order changed how the show is viewed? Was it a strategic decision?

Caspe: I hope that it doesn't bum people out too much. This week, the two episodes that are going to air address what happened in the few weeks following the wedding [between Dave and Alex]. You see how Dave ends up living at Max's [apartment] and how the friends dealt with the breakup. I think people will like [them] as long as they understand that we are going back in time just a little bit.?

In launching a show it takes a while for people to hear about it and check it out, so if someone's seeing the fourth episode first and they haven't tuned in, you don't want them to have to have known what happened in the previous episode. You really want each episode to stand alone. If you looked at the early episodes that we aired after the pilot, you don't need to know anything. It's easier to get people invested in a show that way and now, we have the opportunity to delve a little deeper and show more serialized elements.

THR: You've said before you want the show to become more serialized. How do you see that happening in Season 2?

Caspe: Everything from someone gets a new job and now you're following them from starting a new job for a few episodes or Max gets a boyfriend and now we're following him as he has to meet the guy's parents or get more serious -- or not want to get serious. We're still a very young show so I don't know if we'll be able to get to that right away; that may be later on next season if we're lucky enough to hang in there. We're still launching, but it'd be fun to deal with the characters growing in general.

THR: More TV shows, like Mad Love, Perfect Couples?and Happy Endings, are focusing on romances and couples. Do you have a theory on why?

Caspe: We caught a lot of heat for being "another one of those shows" as if we knew about all those other shows. Everyone was making them themselves, putting them on the air and all of a sudden you realize, "Oh god, there's a lot of these." I just know certain seasons, networks are looking for certain genres of shows and this season, for some reason, multiple networks were looking for a ?people in their late twenties?-kind of show. I don?t know that our show is so much a rom-com. We got grouped into that a lot. As much as we do dating stories, we more do ridiculous stuff. I don't know that Penny dating Doug Hitler really counts as a romantic story.

THR: What are your thoughts on being compared to Friends??

Caspe: Modern Family?and The Middle?don't necessarily get compared to each other as much as we get compared to another Friends?show. Maybe because Friends?itself was so popular, any time you have people in their late twenties that are a close-knit group of friends, you end up getting compared to that. Ours starts with a wedding getting broken up. For me that was the idea of starting where romantic comedy movies end, specifically movies like The Graduate, that's what I was thinking. I didn't realize -- I haven't seen the Friends?pilot in 10 years -- so I didn't even fully remember [what had happened until] someone pointed it out, that Rachel starts the show by running in in [sic] her wedding dress. Even that seemed different enough to me because it wasn't starting at the wedding, but we took a lot of heat "ripping that off." That being said, I get it, we?re always going to be compared to those shows and we?re just trying to make our own mark.

THR: This if your first TV series. What have you learned during this process that no one could have taught or warned you about?

Caspe: That it is hard. It weirdly has given me this great respect for even the worst television shows or movies that I've ever seen in my life because you realize that everybody works their ass off to make these things. As a casual TV viewer, you see a show come on for two episodes and it sucks and it gets canceled, or it's great and it gets canceled, either way. What you don't realize is the thousands of hours from hundreds of people that went in just to get to that point. It's hard to even make a bad television show.

THR: What is the biggest challenge that you face as a showrunner?

Caspe: The hardest thing that I saw is again, how much there is to do in such a short period of time and how the deadlines are all hard deadlines. I come from the feature world of writing. You have a deadline to hand in [the script], but if you're a couple of weeks late, it's not a big deal. This is like, the camera's rolling Monday morning and if you don't have a script, it's rolling anyway. You better make something up on the spot because it's hundreds of thousands of dollars for every minute that you don't do anything. It's a crazy, high-stress situation.

THR: What can viewers expect in one of next week?s episodes, ?Shershow Redemption???

Caspe: It was shot as a season finale. I?m really proud of that one. I think that one came out good. We definitely learn a little bit more about Dave and Alex going forward maybe and hopefully that sets us up nicely for what we?ll do next year.
