Humor can help candidates; but it can backfire

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney hit an off note when he told a "humorous" story about his dad shutting down a factory.

Robert De Niro managed to get both Newt Gingrich and the Obama campaign riled up when he joked at an Obama fundraiser that America isn't ready for a white first lady.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, still nursing wounds from his failed presidential campaign, did himself a world of good with his self-deprecating jokes at a recent Washington dinner.

Done right, humor can be a huge asset for a politician. But it is fumbled easily in the overheated environment of a political campaign.

That may be why Romney's aides sent him to the "The Tonight Show" this past week with these instructions: "Don't try and be funny."

The Republican presidential front-runner largely complied, and that worked out just fine for him. But he apparently forgot his advisers' advice the next day when he attempted to be funny on a conference call with people in next-to-vote Wisconsin.

Romney recounted what he called a "humorous" story about the time his auto executive father shut down a factory in Michigan and moved it to Wisconsin. Later, when his dad was in a parade while running for Michigan governor, the marching band kept playing the University of Wisconsin fight song.

"Every time they would start playing 'On, Wisconsin! On Wisconsin!' my dad's political people would jump up and down and try to get them to stop," Romney said with a laugh.

A joke about closing factories? In this economy? What was he thinking?

Democrats pounced on it as fresh evidence that Romney is out of touch with the economic concerns of ordinary voters.

Jokes that might be funny another time often don't pass muster under the klieg lights of a presidential campaign.

De Niro attempted satire during a New York fundraiser headlined by Michelle Obama this month when he ticked off the names of the wives of the GOP presidential candidates and then joked that America wasn't "ready for a white first lady."

Donors roared their approval. But by the next morning, Gingrich was calling the racial reference to the Republican wives "inexcusable" and the chastened Obama campaign was labeling the actor's comments "inappropriate."

De Niro at first declined to comment but ended up apologizing ? sort of.

"My remarks, although spoken with satirical jest, were not meant to offend or embarrass anyone ? especially the first lady," he said in a statement.

President Barack Obama, for his part, has had better luck using humor to deflect questions about his own vulnerabilities ? real or perceived.

During a St. Patrick's Day reception this month, Obama was presented with a certificate of Irish heritage by the Irish prime minister.

"This will have a special place of honor alongside my birth certificate," Obama deadpanned, deftly sending the message that any lingering doubts about where he was born are nothing but a joke.

Sometimes, humor can come back to bite a candidate long after the laugh lines have faded.

In 2004, when Romney was Massachusetts governor, he took a jab at the wealth of that year's monied presidential candidate, Democratic Sen. John Kerry.

"There's a senator from my state, you may have heard, that wants to get elected president," Romney said at a Republican Governors Association dinner. "And I don't know why he wants to do that because, of course, if he won he'd have to move into a smaller house."

It may have been funny then, but the joke boomeranged when it resurfaced on the Internet this past week just as Romney is trying to combat an elitist image.

Perry, whose Republican presidential campaign quickly floundered in the primaries, took a big step toward rehabilitating his image with his appearance last weekend at a fancy Washington dinner for journalists and their guests.

He got plenty of laughs when he joked that his time as the GOP front-runner had been "the three most exhilarating hours of my life."

He perfectly skewered Romney by quipping that during the GOP debates, he'd been tempted to turn to his rival and ask, "Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?"

Getting off a few well-rehearsed jokes ? often written by someone else ? is generally less challenging than displaying pitch-perfect humor day after day amid the grind of campaigning. Perry's jokes, for example, were written by GOP speechwriter Landon Parvin.

But even some of the most carefully thought-out jokes, in the end, just aren't funny.

Take President George W. Bush, at a White House Correspondents Association dinner in 2004. He narrated a slide show that included a photo of himself hunting around in the Oval Office and then quipped, "Those weapons of mass destruction gotta be somewhere."

Critics said it was a callous joke, given all those who had died in the Iraq war.

Even some candidates with a natural funny bone have found that it doesn't always translate well to a presidential campaign.

Republican Sens. Bob Dole and John McCain, whose humor was a hit with congressional colleagues and reporters, both discovered their sometimes wicked sense of humor could be too cutting for a presidential campaign.

Morris Udall, a Democratic congressman from Arizona, got more laughs than votes in his 1976 run for president and ended up writing a memoir titled, "Too Funny to be President."

On the other hand, some decidedly unfunny candidates have benefited by exceeding extremely low expectations.

When candidate Richard Nixon went on the TV comedy show "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" in 1968 and said "Sock it to ME?" he got rave reviews.

Goodman has created a helpful guide, extremely well-written with frankness and humor. She takes readers through the steps of feeling frustrated with life in a cube to considering alternative escape routes. Of course her own story will inspire readers, as she herself went from cube to freelance status, while managing to live comfortably and even make mortgage payments.

The best part of the book is the section on living the freelance life. She gives down-to-earth advice on organizing the ridiculous amount of paperwork that goes with the freelance life. (I got some good ideas I can use right awway!)

I also liked the section on interviewing for information. She?s listed steps from dazzle (write a nice simple request) to prepare to saying thanks. I couldn?t agree more.

Additionally, Goodman has some excellent resources in the back of the book. Any career-changer would benefit from readings the books she recommends.

This book will be most helpful to thirty-somethings ? those who have worked for five to ten years and are now asking, ?How can I express my creativity in the world?? The Anti Guide makes a great companion to a book that?s similarly targeted, This Time I Dance, by Tama Kieves. Kieves focused more on the emotional and psychological elements,while Goodman deals with practical implementation.

My own career clients tend to be 45-60. While they?d benefit from some elements of this book, I find that senior executives and experiened professionals need to choose different networking approaches.

I have just three quibbles about the book?s content.

First, career consultants often encourage clients to shadow someone who?s in a career they?re considering. I would rather encourage my own clients to talk to half a dozen or more people in a field to get a broader perspective. I wouldn?t give up on a field based on a single shadowing day and I?d investigate further if a day appeared to be a ?wow.?

Second, Goodman recommends creating a website if you?re a writer ? and I agree completely. But you need to create a money-making website, which calls for copy as well as design. It?s not reasonable to expect a whole treatise on the subject but I?d have liked to see some links to sources that can help.

Finally, I agree with Goodman that readers should be cautious before hiring a career coach or consultant. Again, I believe this advice makes moreo sense for the younger reader.

Goodman encourages readers to talk to HR departments and experts in fields of interest. My own experience is that getting through to an information source requires a referral and HR folks are in the business of recruiting and screening.

These days, you should expect to pay for mentors, especially if you?re going off on your own. You might take a continuing ed class at the low end or hire a consultant at the high end, but you pay. I agree with the advice to buy an hour at a time and avoid long, expensive commitmentes. But thes packages work for some clients.

In summary, Goodman?s book makes an excellent contribution to the field. And the writing is so good, it?s a fun read for anyone.

JPMorgan sued over typo promising trader $3M salary

Herbert brought suit against JPMorgan Chase & Co. in Britain's high court after he quit his job at UBS in 2010 and moved to South Africa based on a job offer from the bank with a salary of 24 million rand, or about $3.1 million. The hitch is that the actual salary was 2.4 million rand, one-tenth what Herbert contends he was entitled to as per the contract terms.?

According to Bloomberg, Herbert sued for an amount equal to around $900,000. Following the discovery of the error and determining what his actual salary would be, Herbert didn't take the job. He was only intermittently employed in the subsequent months, which was attributed to cost-cutting by banks that led to widespread layoffs.

JPMorgan spokeswoman Kate Hayworth declined to comment via email. Bloomberg said the bank argued that Herbert should have known the outsized salary offer was a mistake based on the amount.?

Legal scholars say Herbert's case will be tough to win, even though the bank acknowledged making the initial typographical error. "Mistakes happen all the time in contracts," said Kent Greenfield, professor at Boston College Law School. Greenfield said courts typically will interpret the contracts against the drafter. "They made the mistake, and they should bear the cost of the mistake."

But Greenfield said the exception to this norm is if the contractual mistake is so glaring that the contract can be considered unreliable.

This is where Herbert's claim could fall apart. "If 2.4 million is within the range that a person in this position should reasonably expect to be paid, I think it is very unlikely that his claim will succeed," David Million, professor at Washington & Lee University Law School, said via email. "If 2.4 is normal, any sensible person should know that an offer to pay 10 times that amount is a mistake."

Greenfield pointed out that Herbert easily could have verified the contract's eye-popping salary with JPMorgan before turning in his resignation to UBS and moving to a new continent. But although he expressed doubts that Herbert will prevail in court, this still could be one pricey decimal point if the bank opts to settle rather than fight it out in court.

"My guess is this is a case you can pay to make go away," Greenfield said. If the bank decides that settling will be cheaper than litigating, they're likely to choose the former, he predicted.
