Scunthorpe Telegraph published Football fans savouring England v Italy Euro 2012 clash

English and Italian football supporters are dreaming of Euro 2012 glory as their teams prepare to meet in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

A single goal from the returning Wayne Rooney proved enough for Roy Hodgson's side to beat Ukraine 1-0 and win their group, avoiding a last-eight clash with world champions Spain.

Instead, the Three Lions will face Italy on Sunday, June 24, for the right to progress to the semi-finals.

Among those looking forward to the clash are staff at the Colosseo Italian restaurant on Ravendale Street North, Scunthorpe.

Ivan Grammatico, 30, a waiter who is originally from Sicily, said: "I think it will be a very exciting game and anything can happen.

"They are both very good teams, so I can't really say anything about the score.

"I think the strongest area of the England team is they are very solid and don't concede many goals but, of course, they have some very good players, like Rooney. For Italy, Balotelli is a very good player.

"Of course, I hope Italy go through but it is still very difficult to say because it will be a very balanced game.

"It will be a great day for all Italian people, especially those in England, on Monday, if Italy win."

But England fan Jenny O'Rourke, a coffee bar assistant at the restaurant, said she was backing Hodgson's men to win.

She said: "Of course England can do it.

"It will be exciting and hopefully the best team will win.

"I hope England win because if they don't, Ivan will never shut up about it.

"The competition is starting to get exciting."

Carlo Catalano, 47, owner and chef at the restaurant, said: "I will be backing Italy and I think we have got to be positive about it.

"I think it will be 2-1 to Italy.

"We can win the tournament and usually we struggle at the beginning but get better as it gets towards the end."

The Scunthorpe Telegraph joined around 250 England fans in the Abacus bar in High Street, Scunthorpe, to watch the match against Ukraine.

Among those celebrating the victory was Neil Redfern, 27, of Mary Street, Scunthorpe, who dressed as a knight for the occasion.

He said: "Any win is a good win.

"I think we are going to beat Italy and we are going to win the tournament.

"It is about time we won it.

"The players are all relaxed, they have got a good manager and I think they can win it."

Lou Chambers, 19, from Scunthorpe, said: "It was a bit slow but I knew we were going to win the game.

"I think it will be 3-0 to England against Italy and I think they can win the tournament. I don't see why not."
