I recently had the pleasure of receiving one of the most meaningful children?s books I have read in a long time ? Abe?s Lucky Day by Jill Warren and illustrated by Kalpart.
Abe?s Lucky Day is the story of the day in a life of a homeless man (Abe) who faces many opportunities to make his day better ? from finding gloves to keep his hands warm to finding money on the ground, but in each instance, he ends up giving the good items he has to someone even less fortunate than himself.? He even gives his box, the only thing giving him any shelter in the snow, to a little girl who was also homeless and had nowhere to sleep. In the end, his generosity is paid back when he meets a man who doesn?t just give him a dollar or bite to eat, but instead provides a way for the man to improve his life including a job and place to live.
I?m not sure why, but while I read this story I pictured in my mind the man in the song The Christmas Guest by Grandpa Jones.? Both men even though they had so little were so giving.
What an excellent story this isA There are two lessons that I really hope my daughter took from it (and we discussed them to make sure she did, lol). The primary lesson that we talked about was the joy of giving and karma.? I truly believe that those that give of themselves do end up with the better lives.? By Abe being so generous to everyone he encountered even when he had so little, he was in the right place at the right time? to meet the man who ended up providing him with the chance to earn an honest living and put a roof over his head.? Secondly, my daughter and I discussed that while there are some homeless people who choose to be homeless and aren?t such ?good? people, there are also some really good people out there that have just faced horrible situations and need a hand. We then talked about how sometimes the less fortunate aren?t as bad off as Abe, they may not be homeless. They may be students in her class who just don?t have the things she has that she could help out by giving them a pencil or some paper or sharing her dessert with them when the school lunch isn?t so yummy!
Overall if you are looking for a unique book to give your child, grandchild, niece, nephew, or any other child, this is one that goes beyond the silly stories and teaches a great lesson that a child will still enjoy.? I look forward to paying it forward and sharing this book with the children in my life.
Abe?s Lucky Day is even available in my favorite format ? for the Kindle.? It can also be purchased with a 40% discount from Outskirts Press.
