New edition of Ideas@Beedie magazine focuses on international ...

Dec 21, 2012

The latest issue of Ideas@Beedie, the new digital magazine from the Beedie School of Business, is now available online, showcasing the school?s academic research, industry impact and engagement with the community.

The new edition of Ideas@Beedie focuses on the subject of international business and highlights the breadth and depth of research carried out by the Beedie School of Business faculty on the topic.

The research explored in the new issue includes the role of government in small-to-medium enterprises in China; the challenges global marketing faces in the age of social media; a new bargaining model the Chinese government is utilizing to gain an upper hand in the natural resources sector in Africa; the challenges faced by expat workers; and the risks of tourism entrepreneurship in Brazil.

The Beedie School of Business is home to a number of research centres directly involved with the business community which investigate new knowledge and information related to today?s business practices, and this issue explores the research carried out by one of these research centres, the Jack Austin Centre for Asia Pacific Business Studies.

The magazine also profiles distinguished SFU alumnus professor Will Mitchell, and takes a close look at the recently launched Americas MBA for Executives, a pioneering program which brings together students from the Beedie School of Business and leading graduate business schools in Brazil, Mexico and the US to build the next generation of leaders for business in the Americas.

The winter issue of Ideas@Beedie caps another extraordinary year for the Beedie School of Business.?This year the school was named tops in Western Canada for research productivity in a new ranking of globally accredited business schools; launched the pioneering Executive MBA in Aboriginal Business and Leadership; and announced the establishment of the Canadian International Institute for Extractive Industries and Development, a new coalition to help developing countries benefit from their natural resources in environmentally and socially responsible ways, to be run by the Beedie School of Business in collaboration with the University of British Columbia.

In addition, this past spring, the school received endorsement from two prestigious accreditation bodies: the European Foundation for Management Development (EQUIS) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

robparker

ESPN has announced that Rob Parker will be allowed to return to the air after a 30-day suspension for questioning whether Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is authentically black because, among other things, Griffin has a white fiancee.

Marcia Keegan, a Vice President of Production for ESPN, released a statement announcing the duration of Parker?s suspension and vowing that ESPN will take greater care in the way its debates on the show Parker appears on, First Take, are presented going forward.

?ESPN has decided to suspend Rob Parker for 30 days for his comments made on last Thursday?s episode of First Take,? Keegan said. ?Our review of the preparation for the show and the re-air has established that mistakes both in judgment and communication were made. As a direct result, clearly inappropriate content was aired and then re-aired without editing. Both were errors on our part. To address this, we have enhanced the editorial oversight of the show and have taken appropriate disciplinary measures with the personnel responsible for these failures. We will continue to discuss important issues in sports on First Take, including race. Debate is an integral part of sports and we will continue to engage in it on First Take. However, we believe what we have learned here and the steps we have taken will help us do all that better.?

ESPN did not specify what the ?appropriate disciplinary measures? were for people other than Parker, or who ?the personnel responsible? were other than Parker. But Parker?s suspension is, frankly, ridiculous when compared to other discipline that ESPN has handed out to other employees.

Most notably, a 30-day suspension is the same punishment ESPN gave SportsCenter anchor Max Bretos for asking an NBA analyst this question about Jeremy Lin: ?If there?s a chink in the armor, where can Lin improve his game??

That may have been an unfortunate choice of words, but no one seriously believed that Bretos was attempting to use a racial slur in that question. People who know Bretos, including his Asian-American SportsCenter co-anchor Michael Kim, insisted that Bretos (whose wife is Asian) is a good man who has far too much respect for his audience and the athletes he covers to dream of using a racial slur on the air.

Parker, on the other hand, is widely known as a provocateur who would rather engage in personal attacks than honest debate. Before ESPN hired Parker, he had twice been disciplined by his previous employer, the Detroit News: Once for asking former Lions coach Rod Marinelli an insensitive question about his daughter?s marriage to the Lions? then-defensive coordinator, and once for erroneously reporting that then-Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins (now Griffin?s backup on the Redskins) had assaulted someone on campus.

Think about what ESPN is doing by giving Parker and Bretos equivalent punishments. ESPN is saying that opposing interracial marriage is no worse than making an unfortunate slip of the tongue. ESPN is saying that Parker, who worked his way up to a job at ESPN by doing everything the wrong way in journalism, deserves no more punishment for a blatantly racist statement than Bretos, who worked his way up to a job at ESPN by being a consummate professional, deserves for an innocent mistake. (It?s also worth noting that when Bretos was alerted to the fact that some people were offended by his word choice, he profusely apologized. When people told Parker on Twitter that they were offended by his racist comments about Griffin, Parker told those people they were ?uneducated? and ?silly.?)

None of that matters to ESPN, however, because First Take gets pretty good ratings on weekday mornings, and the show garners attention by putting panelists on the air to make outrageous statements. ESPN covets those ratings enough that it?s willing to do anything for them. Even put a panelist on the air who will attack a black man for falling in love with a white woman.

New Miss Universe says win shows confidence is all

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? The 20-year-old Rhode Islander who brought the Miss Universe crown back to the U.S. for the first time in 15 years is hoping that her quick rise through the beauty contest ranks and an onstage stumble will show women that anything is possible.

Perched high above the Las Vegas Strip in the Planet Hollywood winner's suite Thursday, Olivia Culpo told The Associated Press that her yearlong transformation from Boston University sophomore to pageant winner proves that women can accomplish anything to which they set their minds.

"My first pageant was a year ago and already I'm Miss Universe. It's kind of incredible," she said.

She pointed to the fact that she stumbled on her red velvet evening dress Wednesday night before beating out beauty queens from 88 countries as proof that confidence and poise matter more than perfect performance.

"I like the fact that I tripped last night in my evening gown. I think that that's cool," she said. "And you learn from it: Don't step on your dress," she added with a laugh.

The former Miss USA spent the first day of her reign surrounded by stylists and handlers, wearing a scarlet mini-dress with cutout cap sleeves and sky-high silver heels. Plates of cupcakes and croissants went untouched as she sipped from a water bottle with a straw.

For the past six months, Culpo has shared a New York City apartment with outgoing Miss Universe, Leila Lopes of Angola. The two titleholders traditionally room together.

Her coronation ended a long losing spell for the U.S. in the competition. An American had not won the Miss Universe title since Miss Hawaii, Brook Lee, won in 1997.

A middle child of five, Culpo was studying theater and communications at Boston University when she decided to enroll in the Miss Rhode Island pageant last year to improve her stage presence.

The petite brunette ended up winning that contest in a rented $20 dress with a hole in the back. She claimed the Miss USA crown in the spring, despite losing an earring during the interview portion.

Culpo said she studied world events, prepared for interview questions and memorized proper walking and posing techniques using stacks of flashcards.

The aspiring actress took a year off from Boston University to fulfill the travel and charity obligations that come along with the Miss USA crown, and now says she will not return to her former college.

"I do want to finish my education," she said. "I just don't think that Boston has a big enough market for what I want to do."

As Miss Universe, Culpo will advocate for HIV prevention, the official platform of the title holder, but does not intend to speak out on other issues.

She did have a word for the "pageant moms" who have caught the nation's attention on reality television shows such as TLC's "Toddlers & Tiaras."

"If you think that your child is going to be really sensitive to the fact that they might not win ? which they probably won't ? you shouldn't do it because it's not healthy if they get the feeling that they're not good enough or they're not worthy," she said.

Culpo's mother, a professional viola player, discouraged her from entering the world of beauty competitions last year.

"I didn't see the point; I thought it was silly and a waste of time," Susan Culpo said. But she changed her mind when she saw the joy her daughter brought to hometown fans.

On Thursday, the mayor of Culpo's home town of Cranston, R.I., called her win an inspiration for the city, state and nation.

Asked moments before the Miss Universe show why pageants remain relevant, Donald Trump, who co-owns the competition with NBC, responded that everyone likes beautiful women.

His winner had a different take:

"It really comes down to being able to inspire others by being comfortable with yourself. You have to show girls that everyone is different, everyone has things they don't like, but they work it and walk the runway," Culpo said. "There is no ideal body. It's just taking what you have and working it."

This Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012 photo shows the Western Wall and golden Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem's Old City. Jerusalem is best known for its multitude of holy sites, and its most famous shrines can be visited for free. But beyond its earthly past, Jerusalem has an impossible beauty with broad appeal. For residents and tourists, secular and religious souls, city slickers or nature lovers, there is always an unexplored alleyway, street corner or vista that will show you the city as you?ve never seen it before. (AP) ? Weeks ahead of Israeli elections, Palestinian officials are already plotting a series of tough steps against Israel to be taken if, as polls predict, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is re-elected and peace efforts remain stalled.

Emboldened by their newly upgraded status at the United Nations, the Palestinians are talking of filing war crimes charges against Israel, staging mass demonstrations in the West Bank, encouraging the international community to impose sanctions, and ending the security cooperation that has helped preserve quiet in recent years.

These plans, combined with growing international impatience with Israeli settlement construction on occupied land, could spell trouble and international isolation for the Israeli leader.

In a series of interviews with The Associated Press, a number of Palestinian officials all voiced a similar theme: Following the U.N. General Assembly's recognition of "Palestine" as a nonmember observer state in November, the status quo cannot continue.

"2013 will see a new Palestinian political track. There will be new rules in our relationship with Israel and the world," said Hussam Zumlot, an official in President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement.

Israeli-Palestinian peace talks broke down shortly before Netanyahu's election in early 2009 and have remained frozen throughout his term, mostly due to the dispute over Israel's construction of settlements in east Jerusalem and the West Bank. The Palestinians claim the areas, along with the Gaza Strip, for a future state. Israel captured the areas in the 1967 Mideast war.

The Palestinians have demanded that Israel halt settlement construction before negotiations can resume, saying the continued building is a show of bad faith. Netanyahu says talks should resume without preconditions, and notes that a 10-month partial freeze on construction he imposed two years ago failed to bring about substantive negotiations.

Frustrated with the impasse, the Palestinians turned to the United Nations for recognition of an independent state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza. Israel, which withdrew from Gaza in 2005, rejects a return to its 1967 lines.

Although the U.N. vote did not change the situation on the ground, it had deep implications. Opposed by just nine countries, it amounted to a strong international endorsement of the Palestinian position on future borders. It also cleared the way for them to join international agencies to press their grievances against Israel.

Netanyahu has accused the Palestinians of bypassing direct negotiations.

"One would hope we will in fact see in 2013 the re-emergence of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiating process," said Netanyahu's spokesman, Mark Regev. "There is no substitute for direct talks. You're not going to make peace in resolutions at the United Nations or other international forums."

At the heart of the deadlock are the huge gaps between the two sides' conditions. Netanyahu has embraced the idea of establishing a Palestinian state alongside Israel. Without action soon, the thinking goes, Israel will find itself in permanent control of millions of disenfranchised Palestinians, threatening its status as a democracy with a Jewish majority. But Netanyahu has added so many caveats, including a refusal to turn Jerusalem into a shared capital and demands to retain significant parts of the West Bank, that the Palestinians believe negotiations would be futile.

Palestinian officials say they are hopeful that a formula for restarting talks can be found after Israel's election on Jan. 22, perhaps through a new initiative from President Barack Obama.

The Palestinians have begun to speak of a trial, six-month negotiating period. Azzam al-Ahmed, a top aide to Abbas, said Arab diplomats will present the plan in Western capitals, Russia and China next month. But with the Palestinians insistent on a settlement freeze, and opinion polls forecasting a new hardline Israeli coalition headed by Netanyahu, expectations are low.

The Palestinian officials said they will not rush toward any punitive measure, but they are determined not to stand pat.

"We have to prepare ourselves for a long and tough battle," added Yasser Abed Rabbo, secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization, the Palestinians' top decision making body. "We will use all the political tools available."

Among the options being considered is halting cooperation between Israeli and Palestinian security forces in the West Bank. The cooperation is widely seen as a key element in preserving the calm in the West Bank in recent years, in sharp contrast to the heavy fighting a decade ago.

"There will be no security cooperation as long as there is no political horizon," said Mohammed Ishtayeh, a Palestinian Cabinet minister.

The Palestinians also talk of increasing "popular struggle," the term they use for demonstrations against Israeli soldiers. Such face-to-face confrontations frequently turn tense, with protesters throwing stones and troops firing tear gas and water cannons, and run the risk of growing more violent.

Perhaps most troubling to Israel, the Palestinians also want to use their upgraded status on the world stage to push for international action against Israel.

Officials say they will move to join the International Criminal Court, where they hope to pursue war crimes charges against Israel for its settlement activities. Although the road to taking legal action in the ICC appears to be long and complicated, it nonetheless has made Israeli officials jittery.

"We are going to pursue this policy to reach a point of having the international community impose sanctions on Israel," said Qais Abdelkareem, another PLO official.

This Palestinian agenda, while ambitious, is likely to encounter stiff resistance from both Israel and its international allies. Israel has a number of tools at its disposal, including possible military or economic pressure on the Palestinians. Israel's allies in the West, particularly the U.S., will also likely shield it from any attempt to impose broad international sanctions, at least in the near term.

But there are signs that international patience with Israel is wearing thin. There was strikingly sharp anger over the Israeli plan to build thousands of new settler homes in response to the Palestinian bid at the U.N.

The U.S., using especially harsh language, accused Israel of engaging in a "pattern of provocative action." All the members of the U.N. Security Council except the U.S. denounced the Israeli settlement plans at a special meeting this week.

The European Union has also condemned the planned construction. The 27-member bloc issued a statement earlier this month raising the possibility of requiring Israel to label any exports that originate in the settlements. It also noted that future cooperation agreements would not include territories captured in 1967, including east Jerusalem, which Israel claims as an integral part of its capital. There are fears that individual European states might impose sanctions of their own.

An Israeli official said the extent of the international uproar had caught officials off guard. "Something has changed," he said. "Clearly a line has been crossed." He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was discussing closed diplomatic meetings.

Yossi Beilin, a former deputy foreign minister and peace negotiator, said there is "no way" the status quo can continue and that Netanyahu "understands that this situation where the U.S. is the only one to support Israel cannot go on forever." He said Netanyahu, after pandering to hard-liners during the election campaign, will likely try to bring in a centrist party into his coalition after the vote to give the government an image of moderation.

"Reality might impose itself in such a way that we will find him doing things, like maybe an interim agreement with the Palestinians or something that seems now unexpected," Beilin said. "He will make small steps to appease adversaries. And to Netanyahu, the whole world is an adversary."

Rocking the Windows 8 Sensors on the Intel IvyBridge Ultrabook

The combination of good sensors and simplicity of tapping into the Windows 8 sensor APIs are really going to open the doors to some great apps. In this final review I?ll touch on the core sensors, how they fared, and how to tap into each of them.

I?ve received a few pieces of hardware and software over the years for review purposes. Unfortunately, some of the hardware I receive falls far short of my expectations and hardly ever gets used again. This is?definitely?not the case with the Intel IvyBridge Ultrabook running Windows 8 Pro that I received.?My experience with it over that time has left me extremely impressed for speed, portability, touch and a broad array of sensors.

(Reposted from the original article on here)

From what I can tell, the?machine itself is not one that we?ll see in stores, ?but instead its?simply just a model Intel used as a sample to show what OEM?s can create for Windows 8. Mine is not branded and has stickers all over its bottom saying that its not for retail. However, the Intel components inside this device will be showing up in devices you can purchase.

You can read my initial impressions of the IvyBridge Ultrabook here?and my follow up on my 2 week reaction here.?This?ultrabook is easily portable and has many ports built in so I do not need a ton of dongles. That?s key when you travel and present like me. I can easily slip it into my bag and carry it around for presentations and get a lot of work done on it.

It?s fast. I live in Visual Studio 2012 and several other development tools. Speed and power are not ?nice to have? for me; they are essentials.?This ultrabook covers those areas despite its lower RAM and CPU than I usually get. I like an i7 but I admit with this ultrabook the i5 has been more than enough (perhaps its Windows 8 and its claimed efficiency or perhaps its just the super fast 180 GB SSD). Whatever it is, I?m very happy with the speed of this IvyBridge ultrabook.

In October I used this device to test some Windows 8 course material?Dan Wahlin and I authored for Pluralsight. I was using quite a bit at the same time including Visual Studio 2012, Powerpoint, and OneNote. It all went very smooth on this device. You can learn more about this Introduction to Windows 8 course by clicking the image below.

Sensors

Windows 8 exposes a variety of APIs to access the device sensors. The Windows team made several examples available so you can test the sensors. You can find APIs for sensors including (but not limited to) these APIs:

  • Accelerometer ( acceleration along 3 axes)
  • Compass (orientation and position)
  • Gyrometer (angular velocity)
  • Inclinometer (angle of incline)
  • LightSensor (ambient lighting)
  • OrientationSensor (combines accelerometer, compass, gyrometer to get more sensitive movement)
  • SimpleOrientation (orientation of the device including face up or down)

I tested the sensors using these sample apps.

All code samples below are directly from the Windows 8 Sample Apps that you can download from this link.

Accelerometer

Apps should understand motion and screen rotation, which requires an accelerometer. The accelerometer measures the force due to gravity, and the motion of the device itself. The accelerometer sensor tracks the acceleration along 3 axes (x,y, and z). ?The sample app ?Accelerometer sensor sample? tracks the?acceleration?values as they are reported to the sensors and also is useful for tracking when the device has been shaken. In my tests the sample app reported back the acceleration and the shakes immediately, and as expected.

So how easy is this? Quite simple actually. First you have to grab a reference to the sensor API. This is where you see the Accelerometer.GetDefault() in the code below. Then a simple null check determines if the you can access the sensor and its data. The sample grabs the minimum reporting interval that the sensor supports (which determines the frequency/interval of when the sensor reports its data).

private Accelerometer _accelerometer;
 private uint _desiredReportInterval;

 public Scenario1()
 {
     this.InitializeComponent();

     _accelerometer = Accelerometer.GetDefault();
     if (_accelerometer != null)
     {
         // Select a report interval that is both suitable for the purposes of the app and supported by the sensor.
         // This value will be used later to activate the sensor.
         uint minReportInterval = _accelerometer.MinimumReportInterval;
         _desiredReportInterval = minReportInterval > 16 ? minReportInterval : 16;
     }
     else
     {
         rootPage.NotifyUser("No accelerometer found", NotifyType.StatusMessage);
     }
 }

Now that we have a handle to the accelerometer sensor, we can wire up an event handler to capture the data.

_accelerometer.ReadingChanged +=
     new TypedEventHandler(ReadingChanged);

Then grabbing the data is as simple as reading the AccelerometerReading object in the event arguments(using an async handler). The data is pushed to the screen?s TextBlocks one by one.

async private void ReadingChanged(object sender, AccelerometerReadingChangedEventArgs e)
 {
     await Dispatcher.RunAsync(CoreDispatcherPriority.Normal, () =>
     {
         AccelerometerReading reading = e.Reading;
         ScenarioOutput_X.Text = String.Format("{0,5:0.00}", reading.AccelerationX);
         ScenarioOutput_Y.Text = String.Format("{0,5:0.00}", reading.AccelerationY);
         ScenarioOutput_Z.Text = String.Format("{0,5:0.00}", reading.AccelerationZ);
     });
 }

We can also check if the device was shaken by wiring up an event handler.

_accelerometer.Shaken +=
     new TypedEventHandler(Shaken);

The number of shakes can be retrieved with a simple counter as shown below (from the same sample in Scenario 2).

async private void Shaken(object sender, AccelerometerShakenEventArgs e)
 {
     await Dispatcher.RunAsync(CoreDispatcherPriority.Normal, () =>
     {
         _shakeCount++;
         ScenarioOutputText.Text = _shakeCount.ToString();
     });
 }

Compass

The compass sensor reports back information on the orientation and position of the device. The sensors on the Intel IvyBridge Ultrabook detected the position using the compass very well when measured against other compasses I had available to me. You can use the Windows 8 sample app ?Compass sensor sample? to detect the direction (north, south, east, west) measured in degrees. First you grab the compass object.

private Compass _compass;

Then wire up an event handler

_compass.ReadingChanged +=
     new TypedEventHandler(ReadingChanged);

Grab the reading in the event handler and display the position in degrees.

CompassReading reading = e.Reading;
 ScenarioOutput_MagneticNorth.Text = String.Format("{0,5:0.00}", reading.HeadingMagneticNorth);

Gyrometer

The Gyrometer sensor measures angular speed along 3 axes. The gyrometer on the Intel IvyBridge Ultrabook device proved to be very sensitive (a good thing) and when used in combination with other sensors such as a compass, it can be quite useful in motion and position sensing systems (think gaming). You can test the gyro using the ?Gyrometer sensor sample?. First grab the Gyrometer object

private Gyrometer _gyrometer;

Then wire up the event handler

_gyrometer.ReadingChanged +=
     new TypedEventHandler(ReadingChanged);

Finally, read the angular velocity data inside the event handler.

async private void ReadingChanged(object sender, GyrometerReadingChangedEventArgs e)
 {
     await Dispatcher.RunAsync(CoreDispatcherPriority.Normal, () =>
     {
         GyrometerReading reading = e.Reading;
         ScenarioOutput_X.Text = String.Format("{0,5:0.00}", reading.AngularVelocityX);
         ScenarioOutput_Y.Text = String.Format("{0,5:0.00}", reading.AngularVelocityY);
         ScenarioOutput_Z.Text = String.Format("{0,5:0.00}", reading.AngularVelocityZ);
     });
 }

Inclinometer

The inclinometer measures the angle of incline exposing the yaw, pitch, and roll readings from the device. The yaw is the z rotation, the roll is the y rotation, and the pitch is the x rotation of the device. I tapped into these APIs using the Windows 8 sample ?Inclinometer sensor sample?. Again, the Intel IvyBridge Ultrabook?s sensors performed quite well reporting back the inclinometer readings. You can tap into this API following the familiar pattern I showed with the other APIs. First grab the Inclinometer object

private Inclinometer _inclinometer;

Then wire up the event handler

_inclinometer.ReadingChanged +=
     new TypedEventHandler(ReadingChanged);

Finally, read the yaw, pitch and roll data inside the event handler.

async private void ReadingChanged(object sender, InclinometerReadingChangedEventArgs e)
 {
     await Dispatcher.RunAsync(CoreDispatcherPriority.Normal, () =>
     {
         InclinometerReading reading = e.Reading;
         ScenarioOutput_X.Text = String.Format("{0,5:0.00}", reading.PitchDegrees);
         ScenarioOutput_Y.Text = String.Format("{0,5:0.00}", reading.RollDegrees);
         ScenarioOutput_Z.Text = String.Format("{0,5:0.00}", reading.YawDegrees);
     });
 }

LightSensor

The Intel IvyBridge device has an ambient light sensor that reports the brightness level. This can be used for various purposes including adjusting the display?s brightness in a room with changing light. I tested this in a dark room, bright room, indoor and outdoor, and by moving a bright lightsource (desk lamp) near the Ultrabook. The sensor reported bacl consistent and expected data for all tests I ran.

Tapping into the light sensor is as easy as grabbing the LightSensor object (notice this sensor has the suffix ?sensor? while the previous sensor APIs I mentioned do not). You can see this for yourself in the Windows 8 sample titled ?LightSensor sample?.

private LightSensor _sensor;

Then wire up the event handler

_sensor.ReadingChanged +=
     new TypedEventHandler(ReadingChanged);

Finally, read the illumination data (in lux) inside the event handler.

async private void ReadingChanged(object sender, LightSensorReadingChangedEventArgs e)
 {
     await Dispatcher.RunAsync(CoreDispatcherPriority.Normal, () =>
     {
         LightSensorReading reading = e.Reading;
         ScenarioOutput_LUX.Text = String.Format("{0,5:0.00}", reading.IlluminanceInLux);
     });
 }

OrientationSensor

The OrientationSensor combines the accelerometer, compass, and gyrometer to report even more sensitive movement than the sensors can on their own. You could use this to orient an image on the screen by reading the device orientation, the screen orientation and the accelerometer, for example.

First grab the OrientationSensor object

private OrientationSensor _sensor;

Then wire up the event handler

_sensor.ReadingChanged +=
     new TypedEventHandler(ReadingChanged);

Then read the OrientationSensorReading object?s data inside the event handler.

async private void ReadingChanged(object sender, OrientationSensorReadingChangedEventArgs e)
 {
     await Dispatcher.RunAsync(CoreDispatcherPriority.Normal, () =>
     {
         OrientationSensorReading reading = e.Reading;

         // Quaternion values
         SensorQuaternion quaternion = reading.Quaternion; // get a reference to the object to avoid re-creating it for each access
         ScenarioOutput_X.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", quaternion.X);
         ScenarioOutput_Y.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", quaternion.Y);
         ScenarioOutput_Z.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", quaternion.Z);
         ScenarioOutput_W.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", quaternion.W);

         // Rotation Matrix values
         SensorRotationMatrix rotationMatrix = reading.RotationMatrix;
         ScenarioOutput_M11.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", rotationMatrix.M11);
         ScenarioOutput_M12.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", rotationMatrix.M12);
         ScenarioOutput_M13.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", rotationMatrix.M13);
         ScenarioOutput_M21.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", rotationMatrix.M21);
         ScenarioOutput_M22.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", rotationMatrix.M22);
         ScenarioOutput_M23.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", rotationMatrix.M23);
         ScenarioOutput_M31.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", rotationMatrix.M31);
         ScenarioOutput_M32.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", rotationMatrix.M32);
         ScenarioOutput_M33.Text = String.Format("{0,8:0.00000}", rotationMatrix.M33);
     });
 }

Wrap Up

The Windows 8 sensor APIs make it easy to tap into device sensors. This makes it critical that the device implements the sensors and reports back the data at a tight interval and accurately. I found the Intel IvyBridge Ultrabook device that I tested to have fare very well with all of these sensors. I?m excited to see what types of apps we will see that take advantage of these sensors and Windows 8.

Online piracy - Legal Blogs - FindLaw UK

A proxy website launched by minor political party, the Pirate Party UK, has been closed down, after lawyers representing the British Phonographic Industry threatened it with legal action.

Earlier in 2012 the UK High Court ruled that the website The Pirate Bay must be closed down in the UK and asked the leading internet service providers to block access to the site.

The Pirate Bay offers users the opportunity to illegally access copyright material for free, without the permission of the copyright owner.

Internet piracy is now on the agenda for policy makers in the UK after years of lobbying by the music and film industries.

Two years ago the Digital Economy Act 2010 received Royal Assent. The Act creates a new system to regulate, and prosecute, those who use the internet to breach copyright protection of original works.

Under the terms of the Act, rights holders will be able to notify Internet Service Providers of users who have breached their copyright, by gathering their information from peer-to-peer file-sharing sites.

The industry regulator Ofcom is currently drafting a regulatory code, which will set out the process for using legal action against copyright infringers. The Act will eventually permit the Secretary of State to detail 'technical measures' that Internet Service Providers can use to restrict access to the internet for those committing offence.

The news that the Pirate Party has been forced to stop their proxy website will come as a boost to the British Phonographic Industry. Geoff Taylor is their Chief Executive.

"We believe [The Pirate Party] should respect the law, and the basic right of creative people to be paid for their work," he said in a statement.

"There are many fantastic digital music services that make it simple to get music legally online. This outcome will help ensure that this new digital sector in the UK can grow, continue to innovate for music fans, and create more UK jobs," he added.

Arizona Electors Question Barack Obama Birth Certificate

The chairman of the Arizona Republican Party and two other Arizona members of the Electoral College on Monday questioned President Barack Obama's birth certificate during the formal casting of the state's electoral votes.

Arizona GOP Chairman Tom Morrissey said during the state's Electoral College meeting that Obama did not produce a "legitimate" birth certificate, KNAU reports. Morrissey's comments came as presidential electors nationwide formally elected Obama over Republican Mitt Romney.

"I'm not satisfied with what I've seen," Morrissey said during the meeting. "I think for somebody in the president's position to not have produced a document that looks more legitimate, I have a problem with that."

Morrissey was joined in doubting Obama's citizenship by two other Arizona electors, Gila County Republican Party Chairman Don Ascoli and former Graham County Republican Chairman John D. Rhodes, the Associated Press reports. Ascoli questioned whether Obama had been"properly vetted as a legitimate candidate for president."

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R), who has vetoed bills to require presidential candidates to show a birth certificate to Arizona's secretary of state, said she disagreed with the trio's stance. Secretary of State Ken Bennett (R), the presiding officer of the Arizona Electoral College, also said he disagreed with what the three said. In May, Bennett had threatened to block Obama from appearing on the Arizona ballot unless he produced a birth certificate that met Bennett's satisfaction. Bennett later said he would not not place Obama on the state's presidential ballot.

The comments of the Arizona Republicans comes a week after birther queen Orly Taitz filed a lawsuit in federal court in Arizona against Vice President Joe Biden and Congress to block Biden from counting the electoral vote. Taitz, who has filed a series of lawsuits questioning Obama's eligibility, seeks to prevent Biden from performing his constitutional duty of opening the envelopes containing the electoral votes from each state and the District of Columbia before a joint session of Congress in January.

Taitz also wants to block California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) and California Secretary of State Debra Bowen (D) from signing California's Electoral College paperwork and mailing it to Biden and a federal judge. Taitz is joined in her lawsuit by federal prison inmate Keith Judd, who received 41 percent of the vote against Obama in the May Democratic presidential primary in West Virginia. Taitz contends that Judd would have been the Democratic presidential nominee if Obama had been ruled ineligible. In her court filing, Taitz claimed that Obama was a citizen of Indonesia and that he produced falsified documents to run for president.

The top five in-demand IT certifications for 2013 | TechRepublic

I remember - way back - when I obtained my MCSE. Studied very hard thinking that title would open opportunites for me. I knew I did not want to continue lugging PC's around and being abused all day visiting cubicals.

My new title was not accepted well by my peers at the time. I was a "Paper MSCE" - no practical experience to back the knowledge I gained.

My big breakout from helpdesk came from a job offer as an Exchange administrator - Global administrator resposible for all Exchange servers, and MS Mail in sites around the world.

On top of that, I had to take care of the networking while the boss was on vacation.

I was in way over my head. The stress was terrible. Made some horrible mistakes. I still think the studying that I did was worth while, but there is no substitution for experience when things break - and the fact that things break keep many of us employed.

My experience thus far has been that IT is a continual cycle of studying. Study hard and get the certification, but don't expect it to instantly open doors for you unless you have some practical experience.

So, there is my first post ever.
