Book Review: In Search of the Beginning: A Seeker's Journey to the ...

Are you the kind of person who likes to see ?the big picture?? Do you enjoy grappling with ultimate philosophical questions? Are you open to spiritual perspectives on scientific matters? Are you willing to consider fresh ideas that cut against the grain of cultural and scientific orthodoxy? If so, In Search of the Beginning (ISB) is definitely the book for you!

In it, author Dean Davis gives us a non-technical, in-depth study of the great themes of cosmology: the origin, structure, purpose, and destiny of the universe. In a volume rich with history, science, philosophy, and theology, it soon becomes clear Davis has a point of view; that at its heart, this is an exposition and defense of the traditional biblical cosmology. However, for a number of important reasons, ISB is unlike any creationist book you have ever read.

Especially for Seekers
ISB will indeed be of great interest to Christians, deepening their understanding of biblical cosmology and strengthening their faith in the trustworthiness of Scripture on this subject. However, from the very outset, it is clear that Davis is especially eager to engage thoughtful seekers-intellectually oriented folks who are curious about the theological and philosophical dimensions of cosmology, as well as the scientific. If that describes you-or your serious-minded seeker friend- do turn in here!

Philosophically Comprehensive
Desiring to reach seekers of every kind, the author has sought to make ISB philosophically comprehensive. Are you a philosophical naturalist who is having doubts about a godless, self-created, evolving cosmos? Are you inclined towards one of the classical Eastern religions, or to New Age evolutionism? Are you curious about Judeo-Christian perspectives, but unfamiliar with the Bible? If so, you?ll find that Davis has worked hard to address your concerns thoughtfully, fairly, and constructively.
Breaks New Ground in Creationist Writing

On of the most notable characteristics of ISB is that it delves into issues relatively few creationist books address. For example, since Davis himself practiced various Eastern Religions for a number of years prior to his Christian conversion, he speaks with feeling to seekers involved in Hinduism, Buddhism, and the New Age Movement. The resulting long chapter on pantheistic cosmology is unique in creationist literature.

Braving cries of alarm from friend and foe alike, Davis also takes a close look at the case for what he calls radical cosmic geocentricity -the idea that the Earth sits immovable at the center of a revolving universe. Though eclipsed for several centuries by modern heliocentric and acentric cosmologies, it appears that fresh theoretical insights and empirical observations have made this idea viable once again. ISB surveys the evidence-both biblical and scientific-letting the reader draw his own conclusions.

Leaving no stone unturned, Davis looks at other fascinating and controversial topics as well: Relativity Theory, Big Bang cosmology, Cosmic Evolutionism, the question of extra-terrestrial life, New Age Physics, the nature and whereabouts of the spiritual Heaven, God?s purpose in creating the universe, and the glorious, Christ-centered destiny to which he has appointed it.

Readable and Well Illustrated
The author has clearly gone to great lengths to ensure that ISB is well organized, well written, informative, non-technical, and above all, interesting. To this end he has included a number of helpful charts and diagrams, a good bit of personal testimony, lots of thought-provoking quotations, and even a few poems and inspirational hymns! At points along the way, seekers may find ISB challenging and even mind-boggling, but they will definitely not find it inaccessible or boring!
