Playing highly competitive video games may lead to aggressive behavior

While most research into video games and aggressive behavior has focused on violent games, competitiveness may be the main video game characteristic that influences aggression, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.
In a series of experiments in which video games were matched on competitiveness, difficulty, and pace of action, researchers found video game violence alone did not elevate aggressive behavior. However, more competitive games produced greater levels of aggressive behavior than less competitive games, no matter how much violence was in the games, according to research published online in Psychology of Violence. The study was conducted by lead author Paul J.C. Adachi, M.A., a PhD candidate at Brock University in Canada.
In one experiment, Adachi had 42 college students (25 men, 17 women) play one of two video games, "Conan" or "Fuel," for 12 minutes. "Conan" is a violent game in which the main character battles for survival using swords and axes. "Fuel" is a nonviolent racing game. In a pilot study, both games were rated evenly in terms of competitiveness, difficulty and pace of action, but differently in terms of violence. After participants finished playing the game, they were told they were going to take part in a separate food tasting study. Participants had to make up a cup of hot sauce for a "taster" who they were told did not particularly like hot or spicy food. The participants could choose from one of four different hot sauces (from least hot to most hot) for the taster to drink. The authors found that there was no significant difference in the intensity and amount of the hot sauces prepared by the participants who played "Conan" and those who played "Fuel." The authors concluded that, in this study, video game violence alone was not sufficient to elevate aggressive behavior.
In a second experiment, Adachi had 60 college students (32 men, 28 women) play one of the following four video games: "Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe," a violent fighting game rated as highly competitive and very violent; "Left 4 Dead 2," a violent, moderately competitive first-person shooter game in which the main character battles zombies using guns; "Marble Blast Ultra," a nonviolent, noncompetitive game where players control a marble through a series of labyrinth-like mazes as quickly as possible; and "Fuel," the highly competitive, nonviolent racing game from the first study. Afterward, the students completed the same hot sauce tasting test from the first study. Electrocardiograms measured the participants' heart rates before and during video game play.
On average, students who played the highly competitive games, "Fuel" and "Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe," prepared significantly more of a hotter sauce than participants who played "Marble Blast Ultra" and "Left 4 Dead 2," the least competitive games. They also had significantly higher heart rates.
"These findings suggest that the level of competitiveness in video games is an important factor in the relation between video games and aggressive behavior, with highly competitive games leading to greater elevations in aggression than less competitive games," wrote Adachi.

Smart casting puts TV Emmy winner in royal role (omg!)
BEVERLY HILLS, California - "Designing Women" creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason once wrote that actress Jean Smart's character on the 1980s sitcom had "legs that stretched out for five or six miles, and one of those laughs that made you feel like riding around in a convertible."
Some 25 years later, Smart's girl-next-door looks, legs and laugh are intact, making her casting of Prince Charles's matronly second wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, all the more surprising, except to Smart herself.
"The thing is, I started out in the theater, so I always did all kinds of parts ? all different ages, all kinds of parts," Smart explained recently, while promoting the TV movie "William & Catherine: A Royal Romance," which debuts Saturday night on the Hallmark Channel. "And, actually, Camilla was adorable when they were younger."
Smart said she hopes the movie, which follows William and Catherine from introduction to proposal, sheds a new, positive light on Bowles, "the true love of Charles's life," according to Smart. Bowles was widely maligned by the public and press, especially in the aftermath of Princess Diana's untimely death in 1997.
"Yes, there are a couple of moments where she has a nice, self-deprecating sense of humor about herself and the fact it's taken a gaggle of stylists to kind of put her together and everything, and it's kind of nice," Smart said. "I really liked the way she was portrayed in the script, and a very sympathetic, likable character, and I thought she ... deserved that."
Smart, born in Seattle, Washington, probably always will be best known as Charlene Olivia Frazier Stillfield, the naive but huge-hearted office manager at Atlanta's Sugarbaker design firm, on the first five seasons (1986-91) of the sitcom "Designing Women."
"Oh, yeah, it was a great job," Smart recalled. "And we had a blast. And we're all still friends. And we're devastated by losing Dixie."
Co-star Dixie Carter died in April 2010 after complications from endometrial cancer. She was just 70.
"Oh, she was something else," Smart noted, with a wistful smile. "And we all (the "Designing Women" leads) went to the funeral in Tennessee, her little hometown in Tennessee. Annie (Potts) and I flew down together. We met Delta (Burke)," Smart then pursed her lips and looked away, unable to continue for a few seconds, but then noting that Carter's husband, actor Hal Holbrook, was "doing pretty well, considering they were inseparable."
Since leaving "Designing Women," Smart has enjoyed numerous TV-career highs: two Emmy Awards for guest appearances on "Frasier" (2000, 2001), a major role on the drama "24" in 2006, the year it won the Emmy for drama series, and another of her own Emmys for playing Christina Applegate's self-centered mother in the sitcom "Samantha Who?" (2008).
Smart was killed off in the first-season finale of "Hawaii Five-0" last spring, but admitted flying into Honolulu for her occasional role as Hawaii's governor was no tropical vacation. She said she would arrive, be up at 4 a.m. to work, and hurry to be back on a plane to Los Angeles to be with her recently adopted toddler, Bonnie. (Smart is married to actor Richard Gilliland, and they also have an adult son, Connor.)
That said, she loved the series' hunk factor, supplied by stars Alex O'Loughlin, Scott Caan and Daniel Dae Kim. "All three of them!" she exclaimed. "I mean Daniel, Daniel Dae Kim. I have this friend. She's this darling, very southern, very Christian, married to a cute doctor, but she said (Smart breaks into a Southern accent), 'Oh, my God! If I met him, I think I'd just have to lick him. He was wearing those too-tight pants and that bulletproof vest. Oh, my God! You worked with him. I'm going to have to lick you the next time I see you,'" she recounted, laughing.
On the horizon for Smart: possibly another play for the 2001 Tony nominee for the comedy "The Man Who Came to Dinner," and a small role in a Meryl Streep film .
"I never was an ingenue," Smart said. "So thank God. If I was, I mean, I can't imagine how depressing that would be right around now. So, in many ways I do feel as if in the last several years I've sort of been in my prime in terms of work and things.
"So, it's fun," Smart continued. "But I do feel fortunate, because I know there's just not much out there at all for women __ (Smart whispers) __ my age."
Smart turns 60 on Sept. 9.

Angry Birds HD (Free) and Angry Birds Rio HD ($1.99): The TouchPad has a few good games on it like Robotek and Radiant, but Angry Birds is still our favorite. Unlike most games studios, Rovio has fully adapted Angry Birds to the TouchPad. It looks pretty and runs smoothly. Enjoy your pig and bird massacre.
Camera for TouchPad (99 cents): The TouchPad has many great qualities, but it?s lack of a rear camera is somewhat disappointing as is its lack of camera software for its 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. This app lets you take pictures with the front camera using the volume rocker as a shutter button. This lets you attempt to aim it at things other than your face when you take photos, but the process is still a bit difficult. ?Still, it?s something.
TuneIn Radio (Free): For those of you who like radio and podcasts, TuneIn is a good option. It lets you instantly connect to stations and programs from sources like NPR, and has a good database of podcasts to subscribe to as well. It also lets you look up an artist or song and listen to it if its playing on any radio station. We recommend RadioLab if you?re looking for a particularly amazing radio show.?
HP Movie Store (Free):?Unfortunately, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon OnDemand, YouTube Movies and Vudu are all absent from the TouchPad. If you?d like to rent (please don?t buy) a new movie for your TouchPad, HP?s Movie Store is the best and only option. We didn?t have a problem with it, found it had a good selection of TV shows and movies, and its rental prices are a standard $2.99 to $3.99.
InterfaceLIFT HD (Free): Interface LIFT is a pretty simple app. It has a library of photos that you can use as wallpapers. That?s it. Surprisingly, adding a wallpaper to our TouchPad has really livened it up. And hey, it?s free, so why not check out the many?beautiful?photographs available?
Pandora (Free): If you want to download MP3s, then 7Digital MP3 music is your best option, but for some casual listening, Pandora is still king. Unfortunately, this app isn?t configured for the TouchPad, so it is small and runs on an emulated Palm Pre on your screen. Luckily, even shrinkified, Pandora still works.?

NEW YORK (AP) ? A person familiar with the CBS daytime show "The Talk" has told The Associated Press the show is adding two new faces to its second season.
The person said Kris Jenner, reality TV personality, will fill in for Sharon Osbourne for two weeks at the start of the new season and could be a regular fill-on for Osbourne. The other will be comedian and radio personality Sheryl Underwood. She will co-host the show for the first two weeks and could stay on. The person was not authorized to discuss the cast and spoke on condition of anonymity.
"The Talk" debuts its second season Sept. 6 with returning hosts Osbourne, Julie Chen and Sara Gilbert.
Leah Remini and Holly Robinson Peete left the show after the first season.

I have been in the auto industry for 16 years. You really can?t just throw a figure out for pay. It really depends on where you live. In the US the median income ranges from about $ 22-48K a year. The mid-west is on the lowest end of that spectrum and the east and west coast respectively on the high end. That figure comes from several different sources. Check your local employment office or state employment website to see if they have the figures. As far as jobs you can be a technician, service writer, service manager, or many other things. I have done lots in this field over my career. I was a body shop apprentice, service writer, a dealership technician, a fleet mechanic, heavy truck technician, tow truck driver and have even done small engine repair. The salary will vary greatly with what you do and most places work on what they call flat rate. This means you get paid by how quickly the job is done. Most people think that sounds easy, just remember you don?t control every aspect of the situation. You wait many times on customer approval, parts suppliers, and sometimes even shop space to do the job. Whatever you decide I hope this was helpful, happy wrenching and good luck.

German Left Party flounders amid financial crisis (AP)
BERLIN ? These should be promising times for Germany's Left Party: a stubborn financial crisis, an unpopular center-right government, and upcoming regional elections in two longtime strongholds.
Instead, an effusive birthday message to Cuba's Fidel Castro and some members' defense of the Berlin Wall have drawn unflattering attention this week to a party that can't quite escape its ex-communist roots.
It has struggled with weak leadership and discord recently as other opposition parties benefit from government discomfort over the eurozone debt crisis, nuclear energy and more. Once-frequent talk of it joining a future German government has ebbed away.
"The situation in our country, the social situation in Europe, is such that we should be clearly ahead in polls ? but we're not," conceded the Left's parliamentary group leader Gregor Gysi.
With demands centering on reversing welfare-state cuts and also including strict opposition to German military involvement in Afghanistan, the Left Party prides itself on standing apart from more established parties.
Still, in elections next month, the party looks likely to be voted out as junior governing partner in Berlin ? one of two regions it helps run. Its chances in another eastern state, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, are uncertain.
It flopped badly in two regional votes in western Germany in March ? in which its center-left rivals, the Social Democrats and Greens, triumphed.
Nationally the Left Party has slipped to 8 percent support, down from 12 percent in 2009's election.
Not the best time for the Cuban Embassy to publish a message from co-leaders Gesine Loetzsch and Klaus Ernst congratulating "dear Comrade Fidel Castro" on turning 85.
"You can look back full of pride over a life full of battles and successful work at the head of the Cuban revolution," the letter said, praising his "political far-sightedness" but making no mention of human-rights issues.
The letter, which surfaced last weekend, was sent Aug. 13 ? the 50th anniversary of East Germany's building of the Berlin Wall. At a regional convention that day, a few delegates refused to stand for a minute of silence to people killed at the communist country's fortified border.
The hard-left Junge Welt daily, in which the party has advertised, marked the anniversary with a front-page headline saying "Thank you" for the wall's construction ? prompting many members to protest.
That all fed long-standing doubts about how far the Left Party has put behind it the communist past ? although its leaders now indicate they regret the style of the Castro letter, which it emerged was composed by party workers and automatically signed in the leaders' names.
Greens leader Claudia Roth called the Left Party "a retro party that hasn't come to terms with the real challenge of a lively democracy."
That underlined sinking chances of it entering national government, something Oskar Niedermayer, a political science professor at Berlin's Free University, said is now "extremely unlikely."
These days, "when it makes it into the media, it's because of internal squabbles or dubious remarks about the past with which western German voters, above all, of course have gigantic problems," Niedermayer said.
The Left Party was born in 2005, when the ex-communist Party of Democratic Socialism ? which had made no inroads outside former East Germany ? joined forces with western leftists angered by a welfare-state reform drive.
Ex-communist Gysi and Oskar Lafontaine, a charismatic ex-Social Democrat, led the Left Party into parliament that year, then into a string of regional legislatures across Germany.
That fed speculation that the center-left might be unable to regain power without its support.
But Lafontaine stepped down last year due to illness, and the party has struggled under less charismatic successors Loetzsch and Ernst ? an east-west duo that reflects the party's still-fragmented nature.
Loetzsch has drawn criticism for penning an article on "the ways to communism," while Ernst made few friends by saying he enjoys driving a Porsche.
Gysi said the party has made great progress in overcoming the communist past.
But he conceded that "we have been too preoccupied with ourselves in recent months ? that's never good."

Why Social Impact Investing Is Legit- What's Possible: The Tides Blog
In her recent Fast Company blog Why Social Impact Investing Is A Crock, Anya Kemenetz questions the validity of impact investing based on the lack of rigorous data collection and analysis, and the high costs of supporting evaluation systems.? While she makes some legitimate arguments about the need for investors to adopt more accurate and substantive metrics, dismissing the field as a whole seems short-sighted and unjustified.
Although impact investing is not new and many of the major proponents are well-established foundations, the more recent strategic initiatives in the field are still in the early stages of development.? In essence, these efforts are more akin to business start-ups that merit a different set of standards and expectations. ?Start-ups require significant initial investments in research and development, product prototyping, and systems development; investors provide this capital knowing that these factors are core to the nature of innovation.? Thus, funding an impact assessment system should be considered the R&D cost-equivalent of building a smart, effective investment product and organization.
The 33% of investments stated in the blog may seem high (and may not accurately reflect a field average), but consider that Merck, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world forecast a 2011 R&D budget of $8-$8.4 billion (17.4% - 18.3% of 2010 revenue) and paid $4.9 billion to users and $12.2 million to shareholders in Vioxx-related lawsuits in 2007 and 2010, respectively.? In that light, there seems to be great wisdom in putting the necessary money into evaluating whether impact investing products are providing the intended social returns, as opposed to doing harm at everyone?s expense.
Greater investments in assessment would enable the field to move more fully from ?monitoring exercises? towards rigorous analysis, a direction the field clearly demonstrates willingness and desire to do.? However, it should be clear that impact investors are not doing so to model themselves after the business sector, which is dominated by the singular pursuit of financial gains (even corporate social responsibility and greening efforts only represent a tiny fraction of business).? Businesses tend to measure success by market penetration and sales, but do not necessarily follow up with evaluating the quality of use of or interaction with the product by consumers, a standard that impact investing aspires to.? For instance, energy companies monitor consumer usage to bill for, but most do not track what people are using that energy for or if they are using energy most efficiently for the good of the users.? The companies rely on the consumer to track and adapt their behavior based on their usage and bills.? Some companies have been expanding into consumer education, but, again, the onus is on the consumer to initiate change ? a burden that impact investors are rightfully assuming themselves.
While no one should pride themselves solely on having good intentions, there is great societal value to work that strives to be accountable to the community, not just stakeholders and people of wealth, and to initiatives that are not undertaken to superficially build an eco-friendlier brand or to mitigate some kind of harm or injury perpetrated by the same entity, but to make meaningful net positive impact.? In recognition of this, we need to see investing in impact evaluation systems as the cost of doing truly good business.

I like the way things are going for Ballet
Ballet is a very beautiful dance. I almost said the sport, but really is not a sport. Or, is it? Madeline says, " Indianapolis ballet is a sport. "Certainly, takes skill and endurance and a certain amount of specialized information and training. But let's look at things like that. What about the cheerleaders and the like. A judge had to really decide whether or not it was a sport for funding purposes. You know what I decieded? Nope Nothing. No sport. What about running. The track is a safe sport. Organized first and second all the way to the last. However, you can run for exercise and is not a sport. As could be Friday night dance for fun and exercise, but is not a sport. What is ballet? There are competitions such as the Grand Prize of the Youth of America in the judges who rule in the art, and joy, like figure skating. Heck that is even an Olympic sport. Madeline would agree it is a sport this holiday.

Students in the pre-professional Ballet Conservatory New York are preparing for a wonderful holiday tradition: the Nutcracker at the Madame Walker Theatre. The end Week of December 17 ? 19, will star in four performances will probably be a sellout. Madeline will be presented on the important role that contribute for the success of this timeless tradition.
Madeline is balancing his studies with his intense ballet training and acting as a key Little Snow, young, and an alternate for the dancers. She has been a valuable student teachers IBC for years and has had the opportunity to perform many functions lead and compete internationally, while his own defense, the conservatory, and Indiana.
