The City of Fort Collins Adaptive Recreation Opportunities and U.S. ...

August 19, 2011 (Fort Collins, CO) - The City of Fort Collins Adaptive Recreation Opportunities (ARO) program will be hosting a 2011 Paralympic Experience in conjunction with U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee. The event is scheduled for August 20, 2011 during the Fort Collins Cycling Festival on Canyon Avenue in Old Town.

?The Fort Collins Cycling Festival will be an excellent avenue to raise awareness about the opportunities available through the US Paralympics and our community based club, Paralympic Sport Club-Fort Collins, as well as reach out to new participants and Veterans with physical disabilities,? says Renee Lee, CTRS, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor of ARO.

This Paralympic Experience will introduce community members with physical and visual disabilities to Paralympic sports. In addition to hands-on participation in adaptive cycling the participants will interact with Paralympic athletes and coaches.

?The Paralympic Experience program encourages physical fitness and overall well-being for individuals with physical and visual disabilities, and we are thrilled to be working with Paralympic Sport Club Fort Collins on this initiative,? said Charlie Huebner, USOC Chief of Paralympics. ?Research shows that individuals with physical and visual disabilities who participate in physical activity are healthier, more successful in school, have great access to employment opportunities and have an enhanced quality of life.?

Paralympic Experiences are being held in communities throughout the country. Participation in the Experience is free. Join us for the US Handcycling, Rocky Mountain Criterium & the Rist Canyon Road Race. Fort Collins Cycling Festival strives to create educational, entertaining and environmentally-sustainable cycling events with as much community involvement as possible. Founder, Charles Weinbeck, promotes cycling events to perpetuate his belief that eco-responsibility and fun-filled events are not mutually exclusive.
